Teadrop-ish license plate frame?

Postby RockyMountainTeardrops » Fri Nov 12, 2010 4:43 pm

Hello all,
Tried the "search", but couldn't find anything....so apologies if I'm being a pain.

Does anybody know of a camping / teardrop license plate frame?
I'm redoing the back end of my tear (including replacing the Autozone square, boring taillights with oval LEDs), and I'm looking for something cool for the license plate.
(instead of just screwing the plate to the body, which is what I did before).

An internet search is only coming up with barbed wire or palm trees, and since I'm neither a rancher nor a beach bum, I'm hoping to find something else.

??

I couldn't find anything I liked either, so I finally opted for a plain chrome one from Wally World. It's a lot better than a naked plate. Sorry.. can't find a picture of it. :(

I went with a frame from "Life is Good" company. To me, when camping, life IS good. 8) 8)

There are some at CafePress...

I know I've also seen some on Etsy, but don't see any there at the moment.

This one is a solid double but I'd sure like a home run...
The stick-on vinyl is the "deal breaker" on that one.

Good ideas! Keep them coming, please!

Has anybody seen a "Tread Lightly" frame? Maybe with cast/engraved letters in lieu of a sticker? That might look nice.

I had a custom license plate frame made by The Knobmeister (www.knobmeister.com). Black powder-coated metal.

I got a polished stainless one from him years ago for a Miata.

Excellent quality, exceptional service.

No help on the plate but some one on here used a half clam shell drawer pull to cover his light made it look old fashion and neat.

That's pretty nice, but not the "gotta have" yet.....
(but it is on the top of the list)
Is that engraved or a stick-on?

Going out today to see what I can find. Right now I'm leaning more toward a clean, chrome style.

Still thinking........anybody else?

Lee,

Be original. With a bandsaw and a router you can make this tag frame from a piece of 3/4" thick wood (you choice of type of wood). I drew a Colorado tag and then drew a teardrop shape that you cut out of the wood stock. Draw an outline of the tag and use the router to cut a 1/4" to 3/8" deep recess for the tag. Screw it to the wood with short screws. Cut a piece of plexiglass or acrylic from Home Depot in the same shape and screw it to the TD shape to cover the tag and frame. You can use some clear sealant around the edges to keep water out. Mount it on a bracket to attach to the TD. the drawing below shows face and side views.

You could always go with the plate frame located in "The Store" link at the top of this page.
