Hey, just because you are getting near double digits doesn't mean we all have to be a prolific as you

OK, until at least the MIDDLE of next year

That's an idea. I found this while searching, might be a viable option. Only thing is the cupola would still be up and would place drag while towing. Thinking

OK, what about going v-shape or rounded to cut drag?

My aging bones may suggest that this is the last one for a while
Your lifting mechanism will require some engineering for copula, but you're really not going that high.

Caboose trailer

Postby Wild Bill » Tue Nov 16, 2010 9:55 pm

I met a guy on the road about 14 years ago that built on to the back of his small RV to look like the back of a Passenger car. His name was Walter Krueger from the St. Paul Area. He has since passed on but a great couple I met on the road and a neat Railway themed RV. You could carry lightweight plastic "wheelsets" to clip on when parked for the look.
Do not forget to have marker lights on the end corners. Would make good tailights. My Grandpa worked for the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad. That became the Burlington Northern in March of 1970 and now is the BNSF. Just came from Home Depot and they still sell what they call Car siding. Repro signs are available at Railroad and Train shows. Cool idea.

Mark you could build the cupola on like a track and have it while on the road kind of hinged in the back of the trailer and have a sunroof type of slide for the opening and when you get to the campground move on the tracks back to the position and latch it in over the hole in the top and slide the sunroof cover back out of the way!?!? Not sure if you can picture it but was watching Leaugue of Extrodinary gentleman while reading this and just saw that beginning scene with the tank in london with the piece that slides down the track and out of the way lol. Thats what gave the idea
In God we trust, shoot the rest and he will sort out!

Cupola top & lateral sides could slide up and down with the sides going outside the main trailer body. Have a short trunk extend up from the main roof to be overlapped by a short overhang on the cupola- sort of like a shoebox lid.

The front & back of the cupola could fold down for transport. A small drip moulding on the folding panels would eliminate any leaks from the hinge area.

The only concerns for sealing would be the gap where the hinged panels mate with the side panels. Maybe a waterproof fabric strip with velcro? I think it would be pretty easy to route the drips out.

Our Chalet trailer is 100% waterproof in any rain that we've seen. As long as the water is falling- even almost sideways- it sheds. Wash it with a hose where you're shooting up though and you can get gallons inside.

Funny I was thinking along the same lines earlier tonight.... come here and find this thread already in action....

Get enough of them built and it would make a very cool gathering.

Mine would be more along these lines but with wood....

I myself am not much of a railroad enthusiast but I would love to watch your build. I like the work you did on your Little Swiss teardrop and I know we would all learn lots from watching you. Come on... you know you wanna do it.... the wife doesn't need a new closet... you need another build!!!!

I'll be waiting with great anticipation. DO IT!!!

I believe Sharon has a center rising roof that might give some interesting ideas! I think it is cool taking a classic icon and making it into something usable! Just like the Road Rocket, Roswell, Gypsy Wagon, Etc.

So why would it need to fit in the garage? Any flexibility in that area maybe? When I first was reading it I thought you might have meant literally like Spinnernut's trailer he pulls behind the teardrop (A literal caboose so to speak)... So going along those lines..... Maybe... this could be something that could be a REAL caboose that looks like a caboose!! Your mockup of course in Red and White made me think of it.. and in miniature form, you could use it for alot of things... A smoker with the roof being the lid, or a way to transport some little cycles or who knows what??? Just thinkin out loud...

The cupola could be lowered a bit , maybe more "scale ".. All that pop up stuff would be a "hassle" compared to a fixed one ...

WD Ya might look at the round nosed trolly pics. Very similar and you could gain a bit of aerodynamics from the round nose. I had one started and a fellow wanted my frame real bad and I got greedy.I had the trolly top and the round nose worked out.

Hell I was hoping to start a fad with barns... :rofl2:

Barns are a lil square for me :)... I like the trolley cars, but they have made them into busses where I live.

Trolley car.

I'd rather get one of these and paint it like a vintage SF trolley and turn it into an RV.
