Bad week

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

We're very sorry to hear the sad news. We lost our Springer Spaniel in 2008 at age 13, so we know what you're going through. At first we didn't want another dog either - we still had our little yellow Lab cross, so that helped us out a lot, but she missed her buddy as much as we did. Then one of my wife's coworkers found a filthy, ratty looking Golden Retriever running loose. After spending 6 months trying to find the owners, she was told that she couldn't keep him in her apartment. Well, guess who has him now?

I guess what I'm saying is, "Never say never." No, our pets are never "just a dog (or cat, for that matter)" and another dog will never replace your Shepherd, but much like a second child will make good memories even better, another camping buddy can't help but bring the smiles back.

When the time is right, Rebapuck is 100% correct - there are literally thousands of good dogs available for adoption who would just love to go camping with you.

Dear PKCSPT,

Sorry to hear of your loss of your canine companion. It's amazing
how close we can become to them. It's obviously not the same as
losing a close human friend, but it is still a true loss nevertheless.
Take the time you need to deal with her passing.

We also lost our small Cocker Spaniel, Darby, about five weeks ago.
She was 11 and had a terminal heart condition, so we were not as
taken by surprise as you were. She passed in her sleep, sooner than
we were expecting her to, though. It is still not something you want
to find when you go to let her out in the morning. We also have a
half-brother of her's, Doogie, 8, who also has the same heart condition,
we are told by the vet, so it is also just a matter of time for him too,
unfortunately. So we'll just enjoy him as long as we have him.

As time goes on, you will be comforted by your memories of her.
If you decide to get another new companion, don't think of it as
replacing the one you just lost. There is no replacing the unique
relationship you had with her. Just the possibility of another happy
canine friendship is worth the try.

Rescuing is a fine thing to do if it fits your circumstances. We decided
to get a new puppy though, due to our having another dog that wouldn't
deal very well with a new adult dog coming into her territory. We decided
to also change breeds and just got a little female Boston Terrier. We
wanted another smaller - but not too small - dog as they fit our
circumstances the best. Caili, is now 10 weeks old and learning her
world one day at a time. A lot of her antics are just like Darby's were
at that stage of her life. Since we had no choice but to accept the
reality of Darby's permanent absence, we're not really saddened now by
recalling how Darby was back 'when". Whenever something Caili does
reminds us of Darby it just helps us enjoy the memory. Can't really
say why that happens but it does. Another stepping stone in the river
of time I suspect.

Take the time you need to adjust. You'll know when it's time to move
forward.

it isn't just a dog, or an only animal

who leaves a big hole behind.

Casa Black Sheep has been home, for years, to Kymba, Rushlight, Redcat, Twocat, Bearcat, Tribble, Fiendy, Alex, and most recently Least Beast.

Yesterday we had to put TwoCat to sleep. She was a delicate little lady with a solemn manner, a beautiful face, and a dancing soul.

I will miss her.

I know how badly you ache. I've recently loss the best dog I've ever had. We do have another dog here at home (a poodle) but it's not the same. I like bigger dogs and I miss my big hearted goof. I thought I wanted another pet right away and went to the humane society to find a new one, but somehow didn't find the right one among the hundreds they have there. I think I just wasn't quite ready yet. Maybe come spring time. My heart still hurts  It's not as bad as losing a family member but it still hurts badly. Take your time, you're ready when you're ready

I'm very sorry to hear your sad news. Our dogs have become such important parts of our families. Maybe it's that they don't judge us, they love us unconditionally and are always happy and up for everything we ask of them. I had to put my best dog ever to sleep a year ago July. It killed me to do it. But she was 12 and had cancer real bad. Our other dog was not the same after her life long companion was gone. I just could not get another dog right away. But life was different with just 1 dog. So after 9 months we got a new rescue puppy. For the most part it has been great for all of us. Our old dog has a play mate and we are back to a routine we are use to. I'm sorry I didn't do it sooner. You to will slowly get past the pain and look at filling the void left by your Spaniel. People with pets live longer, they pay us back in many ways. Best wishes.

A house is not a home without an animal family member. And that is what they are - members of the family. Losing them is just like losing any other member of the family.

My heart goes out to you now.
