Tripled the Collection! Well, almost...

My collection prior to last night's $22 acquisition:

Image

Three 200As (two '62s and a '56), a 242 waiting on parts and a 1994-ish 424.

:SG

Thanks to a headsup from (the) Coleman Collector Forum user Bumpstop, I was able to drive an hour north last night to get these lil' guys for the princely sum of $22:

Image

An unknown-date (yet) 220, a '59, a '67 (228?) and a '72; all dual mantles and from my limited knowledge on the subject, all 220 model variants?

[Edit: From left to right - '35 220B small vent - '59 220E - '67 228E - '72 220F]

So I've just doubled the quantity of lanterns in my young collection. I realize this is peanuts compared to the hundreds of lanterns owned by more experienced and knowledgeable souls, but, hey; a guy's gotta start somewhere. :p

More pics of the last night's haul here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/57106993@N05/

I'm hooked! :)

UPDATE: 3 of the 4 lanterns in the second pic are cleaned up and running; the leaning tower of 228F sadly had to be euthanized and organs donated...

Over the last two weeks I've picked up three clean 228E's... one of 'em's never been fired...

An Evening's Light Up pictures of 10 lanterns now posted on Page 2! of this thread...

Ifr you drove two hours in that truck to buy those lanterns, I'd say the total cost, including fuel, is quite a bit more than $22.

Nice score Chris...I can give you some tips on straightening the 228, but for fear of catching a lot of heat on it....I'll tell you in a PM. Doug

Do tell, Doug. I'll just say to the "heat-bringers", If'n you don't like it, don't use it.

I bent the top of a fount trying to get the guts out of it, one time. They are pretty soft so I think a 6-12 inch piece of 1/8" NPT pipe screwed into the top would be good to get the opening back up into a straight position. Now, if it's caved in........ that will be a different story.

Well, that's kinda what I do Jeff. I strip the lantern down, put it in a large woodworking vice, padded and has a piece of grip type rubber, similar to what is used as a router pad. I find that usually when they are bent like that, one side is raised a bit and one is dented in a bunch. I place it so that the dents are 90 degrees to the jaws on the vice. I thread in the brass and pull on the burners, while gently thumping the raised side with a soft faced mallet. Grip the burners down low at first to see just how much it will take. If you really wail on it up high, you may create more problems for yourself.

It doesn't take much to get it to move, so don't stick a cheater pipe on it and really pull on it. Some careful thumping with a mallet after you get it pretty straight can do the final tuning on it. Once you put on the collar, it can hide a multitude of sins.

If the metal has a serious crease in it and has been stretched...all this may be a whole lot more difficult. Chances are, you won't get it like factory new, but I've done it on a number of them and no one has spotted it. Just what I have had luck with.

I guess someone could do it with some liquid in it and a lot of air pressure, but I think it would increase the chance of doing damage to a seam. Doug

Ahhhhhhh, rubber mallet.......... you are wise, master. In my eyes, if the top has a crease in it, it'll be covered with the collar anyway.

Now, whenever I take a lantern apart, I always heat the brass up, so as to soften up the sealant that Coleman uses. Man, that stuff is tuff.........

Until I read the sage advice posted by WarPony and TheWagonMeister, I thought this bent '67 fount was bound for the scrap heap.

Thanks, guys!

:thumbs up1:

And the journey to retrieve said materiel was taken in the high-velocity, medium-efficiency silver spacepod @ 25 MPG, not the truck's 8 MPG.

I spent a little time giving the '35 a superficial cleaning; the nickel mostly came back and the vent... the vent is near perfect!

That's the cherry in the group! Remember that the numbers are reversed prior to '47 and the single digit year would be on the left and month on the right. Did you find a number on the left hand side?, I couldn't tell from the pics. That's the one you need, but I see that the Coleman forum guys ID'd it for you. Doug
