What would you like to see in a canned ham design?

A "Canned Ham" brings to my mind a large, rounded, silver aluminum vintage trailer sort of like this one:

I think of the Scotties and Shastas as "vintage style" trailers.

Just an added reference about gaucho beds... The original author's web page is down, and glad I saved this. A good reference on how a gaucho bed is built in a vintage Airstream.

I agree with Steve on the profile similar to the Cardinal although I favor paint over polished aluminum (per Doug Hodder's Sierra Nomad.)

Steve, what you want sounds just like a Shasta Compact. Here's one in rounded canned ham shape (though the second page is from a later, bread loaf shape)





And even better would be to build it the same way Shasta did - their claim of 1115 lbs dry weight would make it lighter than some teardrops!

here is a better picture, it is my 1951 Boles Aero which i am restoring the box is 14 ft the total lenght is 16 ft

If/when I build #2 - a canned ham - it will have a shower/potty, minimal inside cooking facilities (if any), and a gaucho-style bed. Interior headroom will be around 72". Instead of teardrop-style hatch, I would have an exterior storage hatch to access a large storage area under the gaucho bed. Hopefully this storage area would be large enough for 2 camp chairs, camp stove and pop-up shelter. The wild card for me is whether or not to use a cooler or refrigerator and where it would go.

So the gaucho bed would go across the back of the trailer? Something like this?

Another good design is that one used in the squidget. It pushes to the back and folds up into a couch and you can store stuff under the very back part. But when push it it folds into a couch. I just think it works out easier than the gaucho style.

I'm sure you've seen it, it's solid plywood that's hinged and rides on rails on the wall.

I'm refurbing/restoring a 66 compact come spring and, despite being on three boards, have never seen those plans before. I love this place

Just to keep it on topic, I'd love to see an aussie-style slide out kitchen. Those rock for us outdoor chefs... or you could do it as a fold-down panel on curb side, where it exposes the side gaucho understorage and that's the kitchen.

I finally had time to play with sketchup a little to show my idea of an ideal and small canned ham. 6 wide, 10 long, and 5 high. Definately a slouchy.
It has a bed for one, a small fold out table so I could sit on the bed and eat, a stove inside so I can make my coffee in the morning, or food on a really bad weather day.
The food storage opens both from the inside, and the back. There is a porta potty hidden in a box in the front. The back would open up like a tear, and have a full galley at the back like a standard tear.
Possibly the porta potty enclosure could go to the ceiling for a sit down shower.
