Losing my garage

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Postby Dale M. » Sat Jan 08, 2011 10:47 am

I had same issues of storage when I lived in mobile home park....

I just bit the bullet and rented a storage space in local "u-store" ... Luckily manager was a pretty good guy and let me work on "projects" there as long as I did not block isle or other units and everything was cleaned up before I left for the day...

There was also the "plus" of dry secure storage for "other" items...

Paint in colour of your choice. After 10 years, replace rotten box with new one.

Thanks for the good ideas! I will not be using any type of soft cover at all, period, it is going to be fully enclosed and protected one way or another.

Maybe I should clarify some more, a picture is worth a thousand words:

Image

The driveway already has a twp spot carport, but I have two cars and a truck! I am going to have to park the truck at their outdoor RV storage section of the park until the Monte Carlo is finished then move the truck to the driveway after I sell the Town car. I thought about just keeping the truck in their outside storage and putting the teardrop up front like you guys are thinking, but I do not think I can fully enclose it on all four sides, and even three sides enclosed is not good enough for the teardrop, not to mention probably wouldn't look very good even if I was allowed. I guess I could ask though.

I can't "build" a major structure in the side yard, the best I can get away with is something that looks like a shed, even though obviously a standard shed is too small, but actually.... it is not too small, it is just too short... so maybe I could take the existing shed and add a section to the middle of it? Something like Mary K's might be do able too...

Maybe I could build a shelter in the RV storage section of the park too? I would think that as long as it was removable or I tell her she can have it when I move if I sink posts, it might be ok. I will ask the manager about that because I would like to make this shed into a small woodshop.

If anyone wants a little background... The grand plan is living out in the woods, I just can't afford to buy and clear land while living in my existing house. This place will be FULLY paid for in 2 years which is the only reason I am taking this step. So I plan on being here for 2 years until I have land in place and ready for a house to be put on it. I am looking to buy the land with the proceeds from selling my house and spend the next couple years slowly clearing a path through the woods and having the septic, water and elec setup. then when everything is ready, at that time everything will be paid for, and I can move this place out to the land and live in it while I build an A-Frame over the following couple of years, and then I can sell the mobile home or move it to the front of the land and rent it out. That my friends is a five year plan to retirement and financial freedom!

Now where am I going to put the cabin in my backyard? That is a whole different problem!!! This is going to be my new woodshop once I get the land, and it will serve as a real cabin in the woods until I move out there.

So round is a lil out of place..... http://gardengreenhouseinfo.com/pvc-greenhouse/

Maybe teardrop length is more your style. :)

I would expect this to be light enough to just set it down over the tear and tether it to the ground. People would have to look close to figure out how you got your tear through that door.

Looks like PVC tube with a wood frame, it's not solid, but might work!

I've been thinking of a portable building to store a vehicle in.
The quonset hut form comes to mind.
Making sections in treated wood or tubing and covering them with corrugated metal or plastic would work but you'd need to work out the details. :D Danny

Is a Sunbrella cover not an option?

Around here you can buy the metal cargo containers for about $2000.If you could convince the manager to let you put it in the RV storage area then you would be set.You could just have it moved and use it in the woods also.

Did you say two THOUSAND? Yes, that would work, and I can appreciate the long term uses of it, but that's a little out of my reach.

Thanks Gage, that is exactly what I am envisioning! Similar to the plywood box idea. That is inspiring seeing it.

I built this one in 2002 for a State Trooper who had a toy sports car he wanted to protect from the elements. Floor was 2x6 treated on 4x6 runners 24" on center.

When I drove thru the little town it was built in I drove by to see my baby and noticed it was gone. His daughter lives 2 blocks away and when I ran into her I asked about it. She said dad took it to his new house !

He simply called a wrecker service with a roll back and winched it on and down the road it went.

Hey Thomas,

I like your plan for retirement! Linda and I are kicking around some ideas too although we're looking west rather than east.

I have an idea for a "stealth" garage. It is based upon a setup a friend of mine once had for his bass boat. In his neighborhood, he couldn't have outside trailers but they could have storage sheds. He built the shed big enough to enclose the boat. The trailer tongue, though, stuck outside of the shed. He had a low door, opposite the main doors, that opened so he could roll the tongue through.

Good luck!

I guess I already live in the woods. If you need a reality check, feel free to ask. There's good and bad. My sister thinks I live in the perfect place as it is an hour to the nearest McDonald's.

Looks like a plywood box can be made to look nice.
