Were you born in 8/53?

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

Were you born in 8/53?

Postby doug hodder » Sun Feb 13, 2011 1:49 am

I recently received a 228 from Chris that is my birthday lantern, plan is to post some pics with it up and burning tomorrow....10/53. Thanks so much Chris...it's greatly appreciated! In an attempt to "pay it forward"....I've got a 8/53 220, all restored, new Coleman sticker on it, lightly used....no globe...I put it into the one I got from Chris.

It's free to someone with an 8/53 birthdate. Can provide pics of it....remember it's bad Karma if it's not really your birthday. Doug

Doug,

Is 5-1-51 close enough? My #2 son is 8-9-89. My wife is 8-28 and my #1 son is 4-14 which is half of 8-28.

Talk about Karma!

Note: I don't state the year of my wife's birth. That doesn't make her any younger but allows me to continue getting older!

Got a Sears two burner stove for a buck a while back at a garage sale. Big Guy (Teardrops for Vets) got a brand new fold up oven at the same sale for around ten bucks. He isn't as tough a negotiator as I am as he's spending his own money. As I'm spending Suzy's money, I have to do better! As you know, it's all her money! It's a little lighter than pea green in color and in nice condition. Also got a two burner Coleman with a brass fuel tank (flat ends) in good working condition but a bit banged up (but it can be straigtened out) for five bucks off of Craigslist a week or so ago. The stove was in Camarillo (twenty miles away), so, as I was near a friend's in Oxnard, I called and suggested we get a Burrito at Johny's Fine Mexican Food which is a real hole in the wall in Ventura but they have an excellent Chile Relleno Burrito!. He invited me to join him, his wife, and his 90+ year old father for dinner at another Mexican Restraunt (and he treated!). His father has still has every one of his marbles and shared his experience of being on the beach at Normandy at H-Hour +23 which must have been quite a sight! Not many of them still with us!!!!! In fact I think the father even has some of the marbles his son/my friend is missing! I'm afraid I was forced to mention this to my friend! Picked up one of the stoves at a garage sale and the other off of Craig's list. Finally got another two burner Coleman in ok condition, for a buck, at a garage sale. The seller "made me" buy it!

I'm up to about a dozen lanterns. I get most of em at garage sales. Saw two sitting in the corner of someone's driveway, unattended, for weeks. Stopped by several times and finally found someone at home and got them both (like new, one with a case the other in the original box and with lottsa accessories) for ten bucks and couple more off of Craigslist. The most I have in any one lantern is about seven bucks. Most have been picked up for 3 to 5 bucks each. I've even found spare globes at garage sales for a buck or so.

My plan is to make sure they work (and rebuild/repair as required but most are "like new") and then find most of em new homes with folks that will put them back into regular use.

I'm sneaking up on youse guys!

Pics to follow.

Cheers,

Gus

Regarding the birthday lanterns.

I collect these lanterns and stoves because I first, enjoyed camping and used these products, then I discovered there was some real enjoyment in rebuilding them and rescuing these things from garage sales, flea markets, etc. and making them work again.

I saw that some collectors started making it a point of collecting a "Birthday Lantern" and thought to myself, "well that is really going over the top". "I don't need to do that....................."

Well last week I had been watching some lanterns on FleaBay and the auction closed with no bids. I got a notice informing me that the item I was watching was relisted. I decided to see what I had been watching and there were two 220E lanterns that were pretty beat up without their globe and rusty. Now I knew why I didn't bid, because I had enough 220E; then I saw the dates that were listed and one was my birth month and year.....Hmm, I thought. I could bid on these. It's OK. It'll be my birthday lantern........... So I bid and picked two of them up for $15.00. Now, I have gone "over the top" !

There must be a slide rule of degrees we all go down as we get further involved in this! I have now passed the "birthday lantern" stage!

I'm still resisting the urge to buy the irons!

Doug, you are a true gentleman. I did not post hoping I'd get it, just thought I was close. I appreciate your generosity. I will PM you.

Here's a pic of my birthday lantern from Chris on the right, thanks Chris...I really appreciate the thought! ....fired right up, put in a vintage globe on it. I'm thinking that it's in such nice original shape that I'll leave it as is...kinda like me, functional, but not as pretty as it could be. On the left is the lantern that is going off to Woodbutcher, it's not perfect, was in tough shape, got restored, but I've been using it for a couple of years now. Doug
