How did you attach the fenders???

Postby TheBizMan » Mon Feb 14, 2011 8:28 pm

Did you run bolts thru the side walls? If so how did you keep them from poking the mattess? OR did you weld them to the frame? OR what else.

Ran short bolts thru wall with the bolt head on inside and nut on outside so no poking on inside. Short bolts will hold it on and no issue with them hitting the wheels.

I used carriage bolts with the head on the inside of the trailer

So did I.

First I positioned the fenders in place to see where I thought they looked good. Then I marked the outline on the sidewalls.

To make sure I drilled the holes in the right location, I made a template from MDF by tracing the fender flange and clamped it to the sidewalls.

Image

After the holes were drilled, I squirted sealant in each of the holes and inserted the carriage bolts. This is the inside view.

And here's the outside view,

After adhering welting to the fender flange, I squirted some more sealant around the carriage bolt and bolted the fenders using fender wash and nylok nuts. Finally, I used a hack saw to cut off the excess carriage bolt length.

Take care,

I know it's not common tear drop practice, but if you're running a standard live axle and not a torsion, you could attach the fenders to the axle. This allows you to greatly minimize the distance between the tire and fender, because the fender is no moving with the tire. This creates a really clean look. I did this on a motorcycle trailer and it worked great. Just a thought

I attached mine to the frame fabricated and weled in place. My album and blog will show some of the details.

...3/4"ply sides...ran elevator bolts(similar to carriage blots with wider /flatter heads) from inside out to attach fenders...used 3/16x1" closed cell/ foam weatherstripping on fender mounting flange edge as welting/sealing material...works well...................
