My uncle actually had a 5th wheel camper that he pulled with his car back in the early to mid 70's like the one in the video. It wasn't a VW, but I believe it was a 4 door Chevy/Olds/Pontiac. The hitch mounted to the roof gutters on the car... that is when cars had roof gutters... and were made out of steel...

Seems like everyone I talk to can't ever remember a set up like that, but I can. Kind of looked like a helicopter with the ball on top and the bar that the "safety" chains hooked to.
