Well, this is really overkill and a waste of a day or more. When I designed the walls, I simply extended the sidewalls over part of the wheel wells to make a trapezoidal opening.

What I should have done was to fabricate these wheel well openings with a single sheet of 3/4-inch plywood rather than 7 pieces of poplar, 2 skins of Luan plywood, and insulation in the interstices.



Yesterday, Dad flew back to Boston so I'm back to working mostly solo. I skinned the perimeter sides and the rear of the rooftop. Still have to figure out just how to configure the front faring to match the front edge of the pop-up by extending the angled front upper panel.

I was glad to see a father and son working together I lost my father when he was only 62 I'm 69 what I once thought was old (62) I now think of as young.

nice build and you already have memories that will last a life time.

having been an electrician for 41 years yep a bigger box would have been better but it's installed and works.

Among today's tasks was fabricating the fairing or wind deflector at the top of the front of the trailer. To the upper 1.5-inch frame, I spliced two more pieces: one a 2.5-inch wide piece that runs the full width of the trailer, and one a 3.5-inch wide piece that is 4 feet long to match the width of the pop-up top.

Later, I'll round the leading edges and box in a section to fit between the pop-up top front edge and the trailer.

I can see the end of body construction now. All I need is one more sheet of 5mm Luan plywood. So, off to Home Depot only to discover that the stack of 20 or more sheets that I have been purchasing a few at a time has been reduced to ZERO.


I'll work on odds and ends like drawers until the plywood supply is replenished.

Page 2 and 5 have pics of a neat Pop-Top pickup camper someone
built probably in the 60s. Interesting work and careful craftsmanship.

I thought it close in concept to your and Sharon's builds.

I can see that the start of painting and finishing isn't too far away. Time to finish up some interior and exterior details so that the application of CPES on the outside and primer on the inside can begin.

Here is a photo of the rotating support arm for the table. This is an item from a VW Camper circa 1990. The hole in the counter top is a bit too large so I'll have to find a new grommet or some other way to tighten up the opening.


After trying several configurations of the stove top, we decided on this somewhat unconventional diagonal arrangement. It leaves room for utensils and perhaps a lid alongside the stove with just enough room around it so as not to feel cramped.


The front of the roof will have to be fitted with a cowling to deflect the air over the pop-up top. I'll round the front edges a bit and make a cowling will just enough clearance to accommodate the top as it moves up and down. The opening for the linear actuator shouldn't be too hard to weatherize. Details to follow.


This is only about half or a third as high as the front of the pop-up will be extended.

Nothing much to show except a sea of white primer paint over every nook and cranny of the interior. Took all day with a brush and roller so I won't be giving the spaces inside and behind cabinets, doors, and drawers a second coat.
