Say it ain't so! Winter storm watch issued

If the relentless rain and flooding has gotten you down, the National Weather Service has a twist in store -- a winter storm watch has been posted for Western Pennsylvania for Thursday evening through Friday evening.
Six inches or more of snow is possible during that time, along with wind gusts up to 25 mph, meteorologist Lee Hendricks said today. It will be the type of wet, heavy snow that can cause power outages and the winds will create blowing and drifting that will restrict visibility, the weather service said in a statement this afternoon.
The system currently delivering rain and possible flooding to the district had been expected to clear out to the northeast but has adopted more of a northward track. Cold air from Ontario will wrap around the system and converge with warmer air at the surface, creating instability. The system already is loaded with moisture picked up in the Gulf of Mexico and will inhale some more from the Atlantic, Mr. Hendricks said.
And then there's the flooding: the Ohio River is expected to rise and inundate the 10th Street Bypass again by Thursday evening. The forecast calls for a crest at 26 feet on Friday, one foot above flood stage and sufficient to submerge the Parkway East "bathtub" section in Downtown Pittsburgh in time for Friday morning's rush.
