Well I got the ribs cut out and they seem pretty stout. That southern yellow pine is gonna work out good for me. I framed it up and left a 1/4" gap all around but the bottom has alittle bit bigger gap,

--measurement error--. I sure hope I can work around it. :thinking:

Larry can you make the bottom cross piece thicker to fix it? Or add to it?

better yet make the top thicker as thats where most of the weight and stress will be on the hatch right?

I'm gonna add more oak to the top and bottom anyway but I could probably glue a really thin piece to the bottom to close up the gap alittle. Just by looking at it , it looks like maybe 3/8" when I was shootin for 1/4". :thinking:

Arry how much did you notch your sides for your hatch? 3/8"?

It's pretty much 1/4" except for the bottom. I used 1/4" shims all around it.

Looks good Larry. The pine should work out well. Agree laminating a little extra shim piece should take care of the gap.

Cliff,

If you can you should try using a 2x10 or a 2x12 southern yellow pine board to make your ribs out of. If your rib profile isn't too wide. I paid only $14.00 for the board I used. :thumbsup:

Thanks Earl, I guess when I'm ready to skin and hinge it I'll add what is necessary to close the gap alittle.

I didn't answer your question right the first time. I used a 5/16" rabbeting bit to notch the sides out and then used a pattern bit and took out the rest of the material. I learned that from aggie 79 and it really turned out well.
