Just about finished my trailer.

Postby Amrva » Sat Apr 02, 2011 3:40 pm

I started building this about a month ago, had a small utility trailer that I wasn't using so I decided to turn it into a small camper. I'ts nothing fancy, just something for weekend camping trips. I still have alot of things that I want to add to as time and money will allow.

Sure looks cozy!

I like the fold out tables you have, and that huge window lets in lot's of light, and is high enough to afford some privacy.

Did you insulate at all?

The next step is to give us some pictures of the trailer in action!

Looks good.
That might be what I do to my little Guy Silver Shadow in a few years.
I renamed it "Leaking Lenna"

Very neat and compact. How big? Do you sleep on the floor?

Nicely thought out. I like the fold up benches and table. Also, the cushy floor squares will help insulate and make sleeping more comfortable. Thanks for sharing. :applause:

Build in a Month

Postby Wild Bill » Sat Apr 02, 2011 9:14 pm

Great Job, campable in one month, I wish I could get that much done in a year!!! Simple and easy to use. Looks good. I like the truck cap back window and frame, You may have trouble with it leaking on that angle while driving in the rain. Hope not. Bill

Amrva, what are the overall dimensions of your trailer. You have a lot of room going on there. Nice job.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys :)

Parnold: Yes I insulated the ceiling and floor with 1.5" foam and the walls with r19 peeled in half width wise so basically its r9, though it did compress some so i'm probly losing some value but no big deal.

Slocowboy: Yeah its a window off of an old aluminum truck cap I got for free. It was actually an after thought to put it in there but worked out great, just had to pick up a lift support from the local pick a part and replace one that was bent.
Yes, you caught me, haven't even camped in this one yet and I already bought the pop up from my other thread. I'm not completely sure what I'll do with it but I figured for the price I could just strip it, scrap the aluminum and use it for a utility trailer for now.

Mukilteo: I haven't let it get rained on too heavily yet(covered with a tarp most days) so I cant claim watertight yet but I'm fairly confident that it will be. The roof is very simple and flat but I used high quality sealants and oil based finish so unless seams start cracking open I shouldn't have a problem.

Deryk: The outside dimensions are 6' x 7' built on a 4' x 6' trailer, excess length extending towards the front, now my tongue is a little short but it seems to tow and back up pretty well. The trailer itself is an older model but its pretty heavily built and the steel is pretty thick too.

The flooring is that interlocking ruber utility flooring and I picked it up at an overstock type store here locally for a real good price. Its very easy to clean or remove if I need to and offers a nice bit of cushioning over the plywood floor.

Myoung: Its about 5'6" x 6'6" inside dimensions. Yes, we will be sleeping on the floor but with some type of mattress that can be deflated or rolled up to one side during the day, I just bought an old pop up trailer that has two mattresses in it so I may use one or both of those(after some major cleaning).

S. Heisley: Thank you, although I actually kind of jumped in without a plan, I'm kind of bad about doing that but I'm happy with the end result.

Starleen2: Yes, it is gravity feed. The enclosure/cabinet above the sink holds a 6 gallon water tank which runs into the sink and then through the floor of the trailer into a 4" pvc holding tank, seems to work pretty well so far.

Wild Bill: Yeah I finished it pretty quick though I'm not completely done yet, also I'm in the construction/building field so that helps too.
I replaced all the weatherstripping on the big window and it has a good seal so I'm just gonna hope for the best and see how it goes.

Again, thanks for all the positive comments.

Can you share some information on what you used for the interior finish, both the type of plywood and the sealer? Did you use a stain? Gorgeous color and I like the satin-look finish. Very elegant.

Junebug, the interior plywood is actually just a 1/8" luaun board, it's a cheap underlayment "plywood" material thats usually made of low grade mahogany. If you happen to find a nice looking batch it will finish beautifully though. The folding benches and some of the other trim objects are made of cedar boards that I've had sitting in my garage for 4 years left over from a fence that I built.
I chose a satin finish lacquer because I didn't want a real glossy look to the wood and I did not stain anything, only lacquered over wood.

Wow, quick build and nice trailer. Good job, I'm still collecting parts. I like the interior finish and the big window.
