Camping & intimacy

Postby robertaw » Wed May 11, 2011 6:41 pm

So, I bought a pop-up camper (but you're not getting rid of me that easily  ) and was browsing a pop-up forum for information.

Under a section about camping with kids I came upon a thread about the mechanics of certain activities in the bunk ends with kids in the trailer - noise, camper moving, bunk falling off, etc.

There were a few funny stories but then, IMHO, things started to deteriorate. It seems the majority of members there seem to participate in and fully endorse such activites in inappropriate public places within campgrounds such as PICNIC TABLES (thankful that I always bring a tablecloth), in front of campfire, in gender specific public showers, and along public hiking trails.

More than once it was mentioned that being seen, loud, or obvious was no problem, "because we are never going to see these people again." Some even proudly related stories about being kicked out of campgrounds for making a scene of themselves.

I just think all of this is completely disgusting and disrespectful to every other current or future camper (the picnic table!!) I honestly hope I am not just being a prude and some others here agree with me.

I have always thought of campgrounds as a good environment for my kids and I hope they continue to be for my grandchildren. What people do in privacy is up to them, but if others can see or hear it thats just unacceptable, right?

Holy crap!!! (Excuse my French.) That brings a whole new meaning to the term "trailer trash." I have never witnessed or heard personal experiences with such behavior and hope I never do.

I'm all for a little romance on a camping trip, but it should be kept private.

I'm all for a little romance anywhere. No one else needs to watch or know.

That's kind of what I was thinking. If I had read it before hand I may have been too embarrassed to buy a pop-up. I hope they don't have a reputation at campgrounds. It's all we could afford to buy in excellent condition. We already tried our hands at rehab and it didn't turn out so well. In fact, we have a load of aluminum heading to the scrap yard.

I hope these folks were just showing off in a forum and don't really act like that. I've never run across it in a lifetime of camping and I never hope to. I grew up camping and was taught to be clean, quiet, and very respectul of fellow campers. I passed the same standards on to my kids. Thankfully, in my experience, most other campers behave the same way.

For anyone interested:

Yay, Roberta! Glad to see you back!

Plan to stay away from some of those campgrounds that don't have a camp host or rangers on hand. The closer it is to civilization, main thoroughfare streets and especially stores that sell liquor, the more bad things seem to happen.

Yes, welcome back! I had wondered what happened to your big reno project--it looked pretty daunting!

My comment on the behavior that your post describes: EEEUWW! Now I know why the tablecloth is always the first thing that I put in place. Except excuse me now while I go outside and sanitize the underside of it with some bleach....

 Aren't most camp tables just plain weathered wood?

From a practical point of view, I doubt you'd have to worry about "extra curricular activities" on those picnic tables unless they are fiberglass or metal. Chances are the culprits would use a blanket or other such protection on the wood kind so as to avoid splinters. I'd worry more about bird and rodent droppings.

Just plain ewwwww and yuck for good measure. Some people just need to stay at home if that's how they conduct themselves. You're not a prude, I'm right there with you.

Yep, you read it on the interwebz...it must be true

seriously, dont believe them. Its just people typing stuff on the internet and doesnt mean it is true. Alot of people get into "role-playing" on the web, and trying to top the last persons story, or come up with something even more outragoues.

I have never seen or heard anyone doing anything like this in any campground (though honestly I usually go far out in the woods when I camp).

Has anyone here honestly and truthfully witnessed anything like this first hand?

I doubt it, though there may be that rare occasion...I doubt more then 2-3 people on here have, and I seriously doubt those people have witnessed it more then once.

Howdy,

Last fall when I was trailering in Grant Village in Yellowstone National Park, two guys "camped out" next to me in a Toyota Matrix were carrying on all night long. I don't know what they were doing; but from the sounds of car doors opening and closing all night, it reminded me of a Keystone Cop routine where they were getting in an out of a Model T.

The next morning, a fellow RV camper asked me what I thought of all the noise etc. I told him, "I don't have a troubled soul so that I can sleep, any where, any place, and any time; but not last night!"

He was so angry that he was tempted to throw out a few strips of good apple wood smoked bacon for the grizzlies to come around and "keep order"! Supposedly, a grizzly can smell bacon a quarter mile away and come running.

I am glad that he didn't because there were some young gals camping in a tent a few feet away. Secondly, the grizzly would have to be trapped or put down because of its presence.

The moral of the story is don't irritate anyone in a camp ground!

As for what these guys were doing, all I can say is, "If you don't know, don't knock it!" I don't want to know what other people do or care about what they do! I am just glad that I didn't have to share a picnic table.

Take care,
Maury

Camping out

Postby Wild Bill » Wed May 11, 2011 9:41 pm

The reminds me of a bumper sticker I remember as a kid. If this camper is a rockin, don't come a knockin!!! And as far as Mavrick71's post Ewwwww Ewwwww and Double Ewwwww. I have seen a couple of times over the years where the younger crowd was too cheap to get a room and used a tent instead, and what is wrong with being a prude. I am married to one!!!
