Shipping Companies?

Postby papmom35 » Tue May 17, 2011 1:52 pm

Hi All, Not sure this is the right thread to post this but seemed pretty close. The saga of the Play-Mor continues and now I need to look at possibly getting it shipped to me rather than going up to get it. Has anyone had experience with shipping companies that they would like to share? I got one quote of $995 from Holden, ME to my house. Seems really really steep to me but what do I know? It's a distance of about 271 miles one way.
thanks everyone for your continued help and advise and good wishes. I WILL bring my baby home!!

You can try www.uship.com

It's a clearing house deal for people who are going one way or the other. Just an idea. Someone might be going to and from with a truck already.

Wow! It would be cheaper to rent a truck and go get it yourself. Maybe you can rent a pickup for the weekend.

hi Tim,
I actually have a truck I can borrow but the person that was supposed to go with me doesn't want to go anymore-it's a 2 day trip (I'm not up to driving 10 hours in one day anymore plus learning how to tow the thing so we were going to make it an overnight). He's willing to pay for the transport but not at $995

You might want to post beginning and ending destinations here, you never know, there may be someone who needs a few extra bucks and can do it for you.

Think I just recently saw an ad for transporting campers on craigslist. It would have been listed under RV's for sale and on either Albany NY or Western MA or Northwest CT craigslist as those are the areas I usually look at. There are companies that deliver new & used trucks, cars & RVs. One is MAMO, another may be Auto Driveaway. I had a pickup transported from Arizona to near Albany NY for $1000, but that was 5 years ago. I found the info in Hemmings Motor News, there's a bunch of transporters listed in there, but many are just brokers and not the actual one moving the vehicle. Bob

This may help but then again it may not, but. A couple of years ago there was a discussion about this very same thing. It came up that there was a web site that transporters would bid on different transporting jobs. Mainly 'one way' type jobs. I used to have the url but not on this computer. Maybe someone who has been on the board for a while remembers it.

Thanks everyone. Keep the suggestions coming! I've got one bid so far for $465. Another person asked a question before bidding so I'll get that bid tomorrow I guess. it's going to cost at least $200 in gas to go up and back without staying over so I have to take that into consideration.

Transportation

Postby Wild Bill » Tue May 17, 2011 10:01 pm

271 miles should not take 10 hours, I would still do an over night but you should be able to make that in 6-7 hours with fuel and rest stops. See if you can bring your bedding and sleep in the trailer. I have not rented a truck in a long time. Where they get you is mileage. you can rent a pick up reasonable but many are not set up with a hitch. You may want to take a set of Harbor Frieght tow lights tie straps and duct tape. That will ensure you have working tail lights. Be sure you have a good spare that you are sure fits the hub and that the lug nuts are not rusted on and impossible to remove. Also have a jack that will lift the trailer and a lug nut wrench to remove them with. If any doubt about the condition of the tires, replace them to save the aggravation of having a tire blow on the road and damage to the wheel wells that usually goes with it. If you had a shop go over it then it should be ready to roll. Happy Trailering. Bill

thanks Bill. the one way trip will take about 4.5 hours (done it before)-the 10 hrs was the round trip. I have a pickup I can borrow that has a hitch and hopefully a recepticle for the lights-I'll have to ask my friend. The bids seem to be coming in at around 400-500 so I may have to do this trip solo and in one day. Yuck. I can practice backing up and hitching it up at my friends house or the RV place I suppose. Hey, maybe my dad will be up for a one day round trip adventure. We'll see.

I don't see how anyone is going to do it for cheaper than $400 unless they are already heading that way and are doing you a favor.

271 miles x 2 - 541 miles if you do it yourself. Even a small truck getting 20mpg (and if it's a half ton forget that unless it's a diesel of the right model - so between 12 and 20mpg) you are looking at between 27 and 45 gallons of gas alone if you do it yourself @ $4 gallon = between $100 and $180 for gas alone.

So basically someone is going to do it for double what you would pay in gas alone. Doesn't sound bad to me.
