Spare bearing a 'doh moment

Was talking with a guy yesterday.He was repacking the wheel bearings on his car.Ran a little short of grease.I asked if he wanted me to go pick some up for him.No I got more in my trailer box(car trailer).He pulled it out and my 'doh moment came.He had to remove the spare wheel bearings for his trailer to get to the grease.He stores them in a small tub of axle grease.I thought,why haven't I ever thought of or seen that before? I mean he has all the parts to replace a wheel bearing on the side of the road.It just made sense,becaue the wheel bearing grease tub is probably a much better storage container than the box and the bearings are really pregreased for use after lying in the grease and bouncing around for a few hundred miles.

That being said I wondered how often a guy has to replace a bearing on the side of the road to think of that.He claimed only once on a mountain in the rain.He also claimed he never had to replace one after that but that he was prepared.

Great idea about grease can....MY only tought would be to clean (solvent wash) and dry bearing and properly pack it before placing it in can, I would not depend on bearing to "self pack" riding around in can...

A friend of mine carries a full of wheel bearings (inner and outer) for his trailer already packed with grease and ready to go in a ZIPLOCK baggie ( those kitchen food vacuum seal bags/machines work real well also) ....

He is a "driver" and on road a lot usually delivering cars on "car hauler" (dual axle) trailer, and does not what to get "caught" along side of road....

Been doing that for years Dale. Used to 'wrap' the packed bearings in plastic wrap & put 'em back in the box 'til I discovered the ZipLok bags. Keep 'em in a separate hard plastic container in the tongue box now. Haven't needed 'em but they're there if I do.

I carry a whole hub, with the bearings pregreased in a large ziploc bag.

I have attempted to carry greasy metal objects (though not bearings) in Ziplock bags & have had the bags get torn from bouncing around. The grease gets out & water & dirt get in. I would now use one of those food storage boxes with the lids that clamp on & plenty of grease to keep the bearings from bouncing around. Unless you drop such a box on hard surface it should stay intact, keep its grease in and everything else out.

I'll have to check mine! I wrapped the whole thing inside of an old beach towel so it has plenty of cushioning, but I'd hate to find out on the side of the road that it was contaminated.
