Am I missing Facebook enough?

Postby Dan & Julie CO » Sun Jun 05, 2011 7:06 pm

I have been thinking of checking in on facebook, it's been a year since I was on. One of the reasons I left was received a phone call from a parent looking for their son who was missing he and had put me as his employer, I felt it was to close to home privacy wise I would like to see whats goin on with famly and friends, bands or things I am a fan of
Just can't deal with all the requests and mindless going on's of each persons day any thoughts from ya'll

I know folks who have Facebook and Twitter accounts but I have never felt I needed either. As you mentioned, I really don't have a need to know what other people are doing with the "blow-by-blow" commentary.

As for me?...Well people would fall fast asleep if they were to read what I do during the day let alone the week...just not terribly exciting :)

Dan. I have 2 facebook pages, one is personal and the other is for my photography business. And I am on them a number of times a day. Over the last year or so, Facebook has made a lo of changes o here privacy rules..You can now lock down your facebook account so much that no one can find you.. or your personal info. Have a look at the account settings. Don't let others keep you from keeping in touch with your family and friends

i have multiple facebook accounts for business, personal and hobbies, I am on several times a day. You can block info from being viewed and only allow people you want to see. You can also block info coming from different people. I have 8 siblings and it is great for staying in touch sharing pictures and saving on phone calls.

Facebook is only as annoying as you want it to be. PhotoGuy is right on...you can block friend requests from people who don't know you personally so that they never even make it to your inbox. You can block applications, so that Farmville stuff doesn't appear on your page, etc. It takes a few minutes, but you can control a lot more than you think if you put some effort into it.

I keep in touch with my family and extended family via facebook. It's like anything else in this world...there are people who don't know anything about facebook that will tell you how annoying and pointless it is. And there are people who fill in every personal information field on their facebook profile, don't take ten minutes to set their privacy controls, and then get annoyed when they receive communications from people in those networks. There's no need to fill in your high school/college/employer information if you don't want anyone from those networks to find or contact you. And I don't feel a need to give people a running commentary on what I'm doing every day...that's not why I use facebook, and my facebook friends don't use facebook for that, either.

Use the privacy controls...they've come a long way.

I feel that they will only get as much info on you as you put out there. You don't have to fill out all the fields, and the ones you do fill out don't have to be totally accurate. I have an e-mail address that I send all my junk mail to. I don't check it so the amount of junk doesn't bother me.

You don't have to post any of those personal details on your profile. If the info isn't there, nobody can see it.

People make much fuss of hiding their personal info. My take is if you don't post it in the first place, you don't have to worry about who's going to find it or misuse it.

Oh, and I never post that I'm away from home on FB, that's advertising for a break-in.

I've been online for almost 20 years now and have never had a privacy issue or problem with credit card purchases or anything like that.

On the other hand my credit card number was stolen twice in restaurants where the wait person made a copy of my card number before returning the card.

What's more dangerous?

I used to have a FB page because of a band I was in--it was part of how we communicated with each other, with the people who wanted to know where we were playing next, with club owners, things like that.

Many people with whom I went to high school found me after a while. After friending anyone who came my way, I realized that I didn't need to know if it was a mani-pedi day or that the grand kids were over for the weekend so I started thinning the herd. Eventually, I started getting angry e-mails from people who were 'thinned'. That was the point that I realized how much of a time vampire FB was and just closed the account.

My quality of life isn't much different without it.

I really, really like facebook. I make it a point however to block a heck of a lot of games. It has helped me get in contact with people that I have not heard from in decades.
The quickest way to find me is on my business site. Yes, I do answer questions and provide quotes for free. Find me at: http://www.wenatcheefarmers.com
