Galley Supports

Postby mollyteardrop » Sat Jun 04, 2011 11:31 am

Right now we have a single skinny pole support on one side of the galley. We really need to replace it with something more substantial and reliable :o

What do you suggest? I would love something hydraulic so it sort of opens itself....but would love to know other ideas, resources, specifics, etc.

This thread contains a lot of information on installing gas struts. That is what I plan to install on my current build.

On our first build I used simple prop rods (oak 1 x 2s) attached at the bottom (to counter top) with hinges and then they attach to the hatch with a quick release pin

Our prop is a metal rod that is attached to the counter top and fits into a hole in the galley door when opened. It isn't anchored very well and wobbles. I am really interested in struts....but your solution seems ok. Nice camping spot...where in Colorado?

Gas struts are great. I had them on my first TD. I just have poles now.

I can tell you that having just one pole on one side of your hatch can end up tweaking your hatch. One in the middle is kind of in the way. Two, with one on each side is best, IMO.

I really don't mind setting up my poles. It only take a minute. But, they do have to be stored when not in use, which is okay for me, with my current tow vehicle, but is not as convenient as gas struts.

I use 2 poles that swivel and attach to the galley hatch with broom holder brackets.

Here is a closeup of the brackets. They are marine Stainless Steel but were the only thing I could find that allowed the poles to go in both directions.

West marine was where I got them, but I have since found a cheaper supplier. I will have to dig for it. If anyone wants it just post and I'll find it.

I love my gas struts. Since we always close the hatch at night, it makes it really convenient and easy to open and close any time we want.

No I don't have to remove the poles to close the hatch, Slow. I just swivel them up and clip them into the broom handle brackets that are in the first picture.

If you come to Minden you can see them in person.

I would have loved to have hydraulic but it didn't happen. I borrowed a few ideas from here. pics to follow.

The bottom hinged piece is a door stop turned upside down. Then there is electrical conduit. The top is flattened out with a hole drilled in it.
There is a pin through the hatch with clips in it to hold in the up position.
I have pipe insulation around the conduit for looks and to keep it from boucing around in the down position.

Several people have done their hatch props this way and I just might do it as well.
