Cooking in camp

Postby nrody » Sun Jun 19, 2011 3:50 pm

Some stuff tastes better leftover. I make stew, Chili, pot roast and other one pot meals at home. Freeze them and take them frozen to my destination. Then it is just a matter of heating up all that yummy stuff. easy usually one pot meals so clean up is quick. Another plus is there is usually some to share.

Most of the other stuff I cook is over the camp fire. I have a 10 inch cast Iron skillet. Breakfast, First I fry up some bacon, when its done I set it aside to drain on paper towels. Then I cut up some baked potatoes (usually cooked the night before on the camp fire) toss them in the skillet with the bacon grease till they are nice & crispy. Set the potatoes aside and scramble a bunch of eggs. Toast some bread over the fire and begin the day with a plate full of yum!
That is unless I am going fishing then breakfast is a PB&J and off we go.

Sometimes I get some nice t-bone steaks, season them up freeze them, We usually have them the 2nd night out, do the baked potatoes (extras for breakfast) go on the coals first wrapped in foil for about 45 minutes. then the steaks go on the grill with fresh corn on the cob.

Oh my I have food on the brain. :Flippin Burger: :picnic: :chips:

we prep everything ahead including writing a menu so we do not bring to much. We also will look to see what is in season such as sweet corn. Stirfry is supper easy just prep everything ahead. I like a large breakfast so eggs, pancakes, home fries, toast(frsh from bakery only) and bacon or sausage. We precook bacon. For lunch a soup and sandwich all premade and for supper maybe simple hotdogs over the fire. We have started using our pie irons more especially for making bread. we do not carry cast iron frying pans as they are too heavy and require to much oil to prevent sticking compared to a non-stick pan.

Slow, experiment at home on your outdoor cook stove or if you haven't yet, try cooking with cast iron. It's not as hard as you think, it's just tending to it to make sure it cooks even and always having a heat-ready supply of charcoal. But, Glenn's (Caseydog) stir-fry is simple and easy. Just season to your taste and you could make a meal in one.

I enjoy cooking when I'm camping . . . it could be a single steak and a salad or, chicken, yellow rice and black beans and a peach cobbler, etc. I very, very seldom eat a sandwich while camping. There is just something about cooking outdoors while camping.

Hey, since times are hard right now for you and you can't make any gatherings, why don't you invite people on here to go camping at your place...host your own gathering. You never know, you might just have some people who would be interested in camping in your beautiful part of the country. Just a suggestion.

Whenever we're forced to camp out (EVAC) , I always get stuck with ALL the kitchen duties, cooking for as many people as show up .. (Max. so far was 27 ) Lots of FUN and a chance to use my recipes, but loooooong hours, punctuated by a few naps ... Hardly have time to do anything else ... especially with a crowd... :o One meal runs into the other, and then they want "nibbles" too ... :o
Just because I cook better than everybody else , no reason I have to cook ALL the time ... Anybody else get "stuck" with the cooking all the time ?

I really love my Kelly Kettle when I'm alone and in a hurry. It will boil water in about 3 minutes with some paper and a couple pine cones. You can heat a can of beans on top of it or even fry an egg.

I like to cook for the family or a group but when on my own nothing beats my Kelly.

One of the things I've noticed is that the continual mooches, subliminal, passive aggressive or not, have sort of worn their welcome out at some gatherings. Lots of behind the scene conversations. If you don't contribute, plan on helping to clean and not just bolt after eating. Kinda what camping in a group is, not to see what you can get away with and gloat about it.

While I usually don't get too elaborate with my cooking when camping, my little Camp Chef 2 burner stove with oven is up to pretty much anything I could cook at home :D
bobhenry, why did you have to post all of those yummy pics? Now I'm so hungry and have to clean the drool off of my keyboard

slowcowboy wrote:a good spot with a delveloped state park camp ground would be sinks cayon which is right below this hill with the graveled road on it. its assecble by a paved 2 lane out of lander wyoming. its like 5 miles above lander in the wind river moutians.

this road you are looking at is the loop road and goes over a well good graeled road 20 miles to connect with the south pass highway from lander to farson.

it has like 20 miles of lakes like the one in the above photos and is full of creeks to fish in and lakes to boat in. lots and lots of national forest campgrounds.

would anyone if I started a teardrop gathering even be remotly intrested in wyoming for camping?

Cowboy, start a new thread under "NORTH CENTRAL" about hosting a campout in Wyoming. Just ask if anyone would be interested in camping out there with you but do your homework. Check out that campground you are talking about (Sinks Canyon?) and see what ammenities they offer such as electric, water, bathhouses, price, etc.

You would want to have it when it would be accessible for everyone - no snow. And, give everyone enough time to plan and save for the trip. Here in Florida, we can whip up an informal gathering rather fast since we don't have weather issues except for the occasional hurricane.

Some people have gatherings right in their backyards and people show up! Just go start a thread (not on this food thread) and see what kind of responce you get and take it from there. Good luck buddy!
