How I measure tongue weight

my vote for the bathroom scale

Postby Jim Edgerly » Wed Jul 20, 2011 4:36 pm

I just plan on using my bathroom scale. My tongue weight should be around 150 pounds, which seems to be in the 'sweet spot" for a bathroom scale. I'll just prop up a 2x4 between the tongue and the scale to keep the trailer level and the hitch at the right spot and it should be within a couple pounds or so of the actual weight...accounting for the scale being off in the couple pound range. Any way...it should be close enough. I will eventually get the whole trailer weighed at a truck stop when completed, but until then and to get it there a good guess will be close enough.

For the overall trailer weight, a few dozen pounds off wouldn't be a huge deal but for the tongue weight, being at one end or the other of a 100 pound range could possibly be a big problem if I were approaching the upper limit of my Wrangler's tongue weight capacity.

I believe that most truck scales are +/- 10 pounds and if they are certified scales should be that accurate throughout the capacity of the scales ... if scales are undivided weigh axle only while hitched to TV, unhitch and weigh total trailer, subtract and you have tongue weight.
