What is the correct and safe way to dispose of old license plates?

I moved out of state.
What should I do with my Texas plates?
You do not need to return the plates. Our license plates are recyclable, but we recommend you deface the number before discarding them. The number on the plate is tied to your name and could pose a safety risk if not disposed of properly.

Otherwise there is always Ebay as many people do buy them.
