What is the correct and safe way to dispose of old license plates?

When I moved from Ontario to Quebec, I turned in my plates and got a refund for unused time on them. Just sayin'

old plates

Postby 72FJ40 » Sat Jul 23, 2011 11:11 pm

Are you talking about recently expired plates or really old plates? There are collectors that try to obtain a plate from each state with no concern for the year. Other collectors search for a particular year. I am sure you are talking about issued plates that have expired. Old, unissued paltes are sought by collectors and rather pricey.

If you sell a vehicle, make sure to file Texas form VTR-346 with dps to notify change of ownership. Use the old license plates however you want . . . they are good for lots of small fabrication projects.

Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

I used a cable from a garage door to string them together and a bolt secures the cable to the tags on each end. Works great.

I moved out of state.

What should I do with my Texas plates?
You do not need to return the plates. Our license plates are recyclable, but we recommend you deface the number before discarding them. The number on the plate is tied to your name and could pose a safety risk if not disposed of properly.

Do you like your license plate?

Texas drivers get the chance to keep their old license plates and either destroy them or use them when they buy a new vehicle thanks to a state law which prohibits individuals who buy used vehicles from dealerships from using existing license plates. The law is meant as an incentive to get car buyers to stop by their county’s tag office and have their vehicle’s title changed to reflect the new owner’s name and information.

The law went into effect Jan. 1.

Not everyone is pleased with the way the Plate-to-Owner law is being implemented.

A used vehicle salesman at a U.S. Highway 82 car dealership said one thing which annoys him about the law was the speed at which the Texas Department of Transportation disseminated information on the new rules.

“TxDot sent out a paper backdated Jan. 14. We’ve had that much notice,â€

The Deepest spot in Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes is 1,333 feet or about 222 fathoms. This profound depth could easily contain the entire 1,250' Empire State Building, even with a 50-foot-tall King Kong perched atop.

I'll go on a limb and say this, plates should be AL, (at least they are in KS, NE, and AR) They are recyclable with any local metal recycler.
