heli question for GPW

Postby mikeschn » Fri Aug 12, 2011 6:33 pm

Hey GPW,

After watching you fly your UFO, I was intrigued...

So today on my bike ride, I stopped at the store, and look what they had...

How do I fly this thing?

Those coaxial helis are pretty stable, some almost fly hands off. The price has really come down on these and the electronics have gotten a lot better.

Our resident heli expert (Steve H) hasn't been here in a long time. I think he still admins at http://rc.runryder.com/helicopter/home/

Well, there goes trailer building .... :o I'm afraid Mike's got a new pastime ... Not even going to mention the Foamie airplanes that can be built for 2-3 bucks ...
But they are fun to bring along camping ... :D

I don't suspect it'll be as bad as you think GPW.

This heli thing takes a lot of skill. And I have neither the time or the money to do the skill level up to the stuff you see on youtube.

I'm sticking with the small stuff, because it's durable and can withstand many crashes. Plus I can fly it inside, and I am not limited by the weather or the wind.

My first one was a coaxial, which is really easy to fly.

I got a four channel coaxial which I am still learning on. The 4 channels are not habit yet, so I'll keep practicing...

Meanwhile I picked up a a couple single rotor helis. An 8" and a 12". I promptly broke the blade on the 12". So while I wait for the replacement blade, I am playing with the 8"

You can't imagine how hard it is to fly the Single Rotor after using the coaxial. :?

But finally I managed to get it in the air and keep it there.

Don't believe me? Check it out here...

Mike I have that MSR it is a good bird I like it a lot, I also have the MCX (coaxial) . I got bored with the MCX. The new MCP (flybarless and collective pitch) is the one that I'm looking into getting. These micro helis are really sturdy and good to learn on.

It's funny because I got a 450 sized machine but never flew it, it's still semi built. I got a Spektrum DX7 for it but I've only used it for these micro helis. I love the DX7 especially since it has 20 model memory.

i think this is so funny. only because my hubby loves these things, but he can't seem to control them. he lost the very first one he flew. he let it just keep going up and over. never put it down to land, and it just flew and flew and finally it landed somewhere over a swamp. we spent all christmas day looking for that thing, because it was a christmas present for one of the boys. but hubby lost it.
..so every christmas now i get hubby a new one.

mike it does look like you have way more control than my hubby did. :applause:

after reading this thread kinda makes me wonder how many guys are going to have the little Helicopter landing pad symbols painted on the roof of their trailers hahahaha

Mike , Great job ... I never could master the single rotors ... although I can fly fixed wing planes fine ... :? Just kept crashing and buying new parts $$$ I finally ended up with the Hover Foam ... I can fly that , and being EPP, the only thing that breaks is the prop ... http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthre ... =hoverfoam

A buddy of mine built a quadcopter that is powerful enough to take his GoPro aloft. I don't think they have kits for it, he had to source the parts and have another friend cut the parts on his CNC laser. Initially, he said the project cost ~$200-$250 (minus radio and GoPro) but he upgraded to a better conrtol board with a 3-axis gryo with heading lock.

One of his videos, he's still learining to fly it:
