All these years

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

All these years

Postby Papi » Sat Aug 27, 2011 6:14 am

I was a young kid living the partying life; I was 20 years old, in Hawaii, and single. I had a fresh assortment of tourist girls flown in weekly (blondes and redheads were my specialty) but I was not happy. It was all so superficial! One day I met this dark-haired beauty with big brown eyes, and she was not like any girl I had met before. Her first words to me were not very kind! But something about her was haunting me. Maybe it was her cockiness. Maybe it was her thick accent. Could have been the way she wasn't scared of anyone or anything. Maybe it was all that and more. I had to get another chance to make a better impression on her than I did that first meeting.

As it turns out, she was dating my next door neighbor! (As it turns out, she was only going out with him to get my attention. Sneaky woman!) I met her in February. We went on our first date March 15, 1985, when my neighbor was on vacation. We were married on this date 26 years ago. We've been through a lot together, but there's no one else that I'd rather be with than my little chica, whom I call Pepper because of her spicy attitude. Looking forward to many, many more years!

Thanks! It's amazing to be with someone this long. You finish each other's sentences and dinner. You know what the other one is going to say before they say it. And every once in a while, you catch a glimpse of the years you'll have together in the future.

I was with my 15 year old high school sweet heart over 56 years, until I lost her a couple of years ago. How fortunate you are to have found the love of your life. Some old-time married folks, just stick together because it's easier than getting a divorce. I urge you to kiss her often, tell her that you love her every day, and honor her forever. None of us ever know how much longer our candle is going to burn.

Thanks for the warm wishes. We never know when our candle will blow out, that's for sure. That's why it is important to treasure each day and look back often to where we've been. I couldn't imagine losing someone after 56 years  or even half that time. My heart goes out to you.

In my family, everybody gets married young. My grandparents were 16, my mom was 15 and my dad was 20, plus my aunts and uncles but two were barely out of high school. My kids followed suit (17, 20, and 21). Guess it's just how we're raised that causes us to match up so soon. But staying together, now that's the hard part! But somethines, it's also the fun part!

Congrats! Mark and I have been married 38 years. We've had some bumps along the way, but we were just talking yesterday about how we couldn't imagine being more married, or even being attracted to anyone else. And it's a wonderful thing to be married to my grandchildren's grandfather! Mark says we lasted so long because (restraining a laugh) HE is so easy to get along with. Yeah. Right.
