Our local power company answered this very question recently:

http://www.centralhudson.com/underground/

The executive summary is that it would cost BILLIONS of dollars to bury their entire infrastructure, and they estimated that the cost of doing it would translate to every customer of theirs paying an extra $10,000 per year on their electric bill. In other words, everyone's monthly electric bill would start out at $833 before they even turned on a single light!

I don't know about you, but if I had an extra $10,000 lying around I'd sooner spend it on a solar array rather than give it to the power company to bury their wires. You'd have free electricity in year two! For that matter, the first month's $833 is twice what I paid last year for the emergency generator that can run my whole house.....

For anyone who didn't see this Weather Channel commercial from the spring, it is hilarious:

I don't know if anyone mentioned it yet, but our local newspaper reported that New York State has cancelled campground reservations and closed up shop this weekend in most of the eastern part of the state. The park rangers are supposedly on standby for rescue operations in the NYC area.....

Still a little breezy in the burbs of DC and rainy. Power flickered on and off all night, but never went off for more than a moment. This is good because my house has a french drain and dual sump pumps. Without power, my basement floods so I was prepared to start the generator (yes, I was awake all night).

The neighborhood has many trees and limbs down. Lots of shingles missing. Couple places are not passable because of debris in the street.

The half dead tree in my neighbor's yard stayed up. It's a huge sweetgum that will take down my fence and shed one day.

Other than being tired, the best part is I am ok and my animals are too!

Thanks for everyone's concern.

Hugs,

Ok, I never saw this utube and it was hilarious!! Oh remember the days when he was sent out into the worst storms.. we used to take bets on when he would lose his hat (old drinking game LOL).

Thanks for the laugh!

Glad to hear everyone is ok! I'm still waiting to hear from my scooter club brothers out there...no word yet so maybe they are without power.

Good luck with the aftermath of the storm and rising tides. Hopefully the worst part is over!! I would have offered my place as a place to bring your trailers, but I'm way out in CA!!!

My sister came up from Myrtle Beach to escape. We had a nice visit.

Turns out she could have stayed there just fine. As for here, we were a little disappointed to not have more drama. Being on the fringe, we just had moderate rain and a few gusts. I was prepared to hunker down on the sofa with a good book. Instead, my sister had to go shopping.

we are back, safe and sound. power is finally back on. :applause:

thank goodness we were with other camping folk, because when their power went out, they had 1 burners, and we had hot coffee and tea.

when we got back home without power, we hit the freezer and cooked on the gas stove. gotta love a gas stove when the power goes out.

take care all, hope everyone else stayed safe and gets power back on soon.

All is well....

Postby Oldragbaggers » Mon Aug 29, 2011 9:42 am

All is well here in Essex, MD.

We have a lot of tree debris on our property that will take some time to clean up, and we have been (and still are) without power for 2 days now. One access road we travel regularly was flooded about 6" but we were able to get in and out with our Jeep.

But thank the Lord our house and all our cars and other belongings are intact, we were able to take (cold) showers this morning and go to our jobs. All in all, not a bad outcome.

I hope the rest of you fared as well. Thanks for good thoughts and prayers.

Eagle, so glad you made it back and have power already! Me too...great that the storm left the bay and went out to sea Saturday night. It could have been, and has been a lot worse in the bay area.

Slo, Coleman comes thru during power outages and huricanes. Pan fried steak, succatash and rice while the heavy rain and 60 mph wind howled outdoors on Saturday night.
