extending floor out 12 inches

Postby Teardrop4me » Fri Sep 02, 2011 2:51 pm

Anyone have ideas on extending trailer floor out on sides by 6 to 12 inches on a 5x8 frame? I am thinking 6 inches is safe and 12 inches needs support underneath somehow. Help please.!!!!!

You will find many threads with this topic here, but in a nutshell, there is no issue extending each side one foot past the chassis of the trailer. Typical 2x3 studs would be adequate support under your flooring.

I added about 8" to each side of a 4 X 8 Harbour Freight trailer. Here is a picture of the deck upside down. You can see the fenders. My trailer is built over the wheels so no external fenders. But I used 3/4" plywood right on the frame . No build up or the floor becomes to high. Plenty strong. I have drop floor in it. That is what the box is in the middle. It goes in between the frame members.

Here is a picture of the trailer before the metal went on.

Sure you can. Just pay attention to the clearance under it. I stayed above the axle some.

... between the top of the trailer cross rails and the bottom of the floor. If not, do you notice any flex in the floor? I have a bolt together Harbor Freight and there is about 3/16" between the top of the rails and any plywood mounted on the perimeter rails. I've also found to get the ply to mount flush, I have to pocket drill for the rail bolt heads, otherwise the ply waves like Old Glory"!

Thanks Gang!
