Had thought of using tapered plugs to fill the holes. That would mean another trip to town, got wondering if it would work and look ok if I made a fairing mixture(think thats what it is called)by mixing epoxy and the wood flour that came with the epoxy and filling the screw holes that way? I realize that it would not match the trim, but I was planning on some contrast anyway.

Not sure what color you are looking for, but be aware even maple wood flour which is very light colored turns dark brown when mixed with epoxy. I use micro balloons(white) to adjust color.
Don't use saw dust, it's too coarse and won't look good. However, the dust collected by the bag attached to your sander is fine enough.
Plugs are your best choice for the best look if your holes are deep enough. If you use epoxy to glue them in dowels will also work. Don't use wood glue with dowels as they will shrink and loosen or pop out.
Color adjusted thickened epoxy will look OK, but plugs will look the best if you can wait to get a good plug cutter.
