Death by GPS

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

I suspect that if you have your GPS set on "shortest distance", then you might get sent on some pretty goofy roads. I also have experienced the "shortest time" setting thanks to my navigator who set the GPS. She has a tendency to hit buttons without realizing it. I stick to "most use of Freeways" and generally get good directions. But also remember, it was programmed by a human being and humans make mistakes.

I tell my wife and kids to "use your own brain" too when using a GPS unit. If it doesn't seem right, pull over where it's safe, check ALL the settings, re-enter the information and if it still doesn't seem right try the smart phone or the paper map

At times I question our Magellan, but only once did it give false info and that to no harm. It gives the usual travel options, shortest, quickest, etc., but also no freeways and mostly freeways. A nice option for those who prefer the less traveled roads.

A GPS told Michael Scott from the "Office" to drive into the lake, so he did it. Gps is good for a reminder on a off ramp or two but you can not just follow it blindly. It is just a tool no better than its user.

Yeah but blindly following it can be a hoot (on a sunny day, with everything one needs to survive, and no risk of getting hurt).

It was fun getting off the beaten path a bit and I'd do it again.

Cheers,

Gus
