Death Shower

Postby StandUpGuy » Fri Sep 23, 2011 9:28 pm

OK I am participating in a topic about electric shower head heaters and the mean while I have purchased an outdoor light fixture with intentions on putting it in the bathroom where there will be spray from the shower going all over.

Here is what I have looked at for light fixtures in the bathroom. LED fixture that puts out like no light what so ever. It really needs to be bright in the bathroom so you can really see what you are doing. I do not have any ceiling thickness to put in a traditional bathroom ceiling ficture. Puck style lights are really all I could fit there.

So then I thought: "how about rope light". Seemed like a good idea so I bought one to test. What a disapointment that was. The light output again was terrible. So then I thought "An outdoor fixture is subject to rain and I do not remember a rash of people being electrocuted at their front door. So I bought a basic fixture which I can istall in the wall of the bathroom. Am I crazy?

The main issue I see with that is most exterior fixtures are designed for "damp" locations. In the shower it might get really wet. Are you using 110 ac or 12v dc? Either way, I would built a water proof cover (out of plexy) too keep the water off and still allow the light to shine

Yes that is what I was thinking as well about the plexi. Really it is a big hassle to fabircate and then you have the issue of future access.

But really is not a porch light subject to torential down pour and sideways blowing rain too? Is it that these fixtures are dangerous in certain conditions?

I'm not sure what one needs to see in the shower. I can find pretty much every part of me by touch. I shave while showering and do it all by touch. With the new multi bladed razors it's pretty hard to nick yourself.

Yes but...I have electricity I would rather simply have a real light. You know. its funny because I have gone through a nature progression of thought and this was one of the thoughts.

Yes it would provided the GFCI was not malfunctioning, but I would test it everytime I showered if I HAD to take a shower in it. Anyway you look at it an outdoor fixture is dangerous in a shower.

The other problem you will have with sealing the light from moisture is heat buildup. The heat has to have somewhere to escape and the surrounding surfaces need to be insulated and have clearance in order to prevent combustion. Residential shower light units have minimal clearance requirements and vent into the rafters and require a minimum specific length of open rafter area in order to properly ventilate the heat.

Personally if it was me and I had to have light in the shower I would install a sunroof of some type that allows natural light in and just shower in the mornings.

GFCI's trip only when there's a ground fault. If you were to touch a "hot" wire or fixture it may not trip since you are in a trailer that's insulated from the ground. I still would use it, and maybe mount the light as high as possible, limiting the amount of water that may hit it.

Or... put in an under water pond light and line the shower with mirrors, You'll never look at yourself the same again!!! ( just kiddin')

Your shower drain would need to be metal and grounded to the same ground circuit your light was on. This is standard code for most states when putting AC lighting in the shower.

Good point Satch

Hot water is greatly overrated but I did make a water heater out of a pressure cooker. Works great! No need to use your shower, I have my own. Still don't see a need for a light. Some of us look better in the dark.

Not really, most porch lights are under an overhang of some sorts, so they don't get hit with constant water. Plus, I don't know about you, but I don't know of anyone standing out on their porch, barefoot and naked, with the possiblity of touching a wet electric appliance.

My light is on the exterior wall not under any sort of overhang. It is right at eye level very easy to touch and right next to the metal mail box. Do I have a death trap entrance? My mail box is not grounded. :)
