Which pocket hole jig?

Which pocket hole jig did you use and/or prefer for building your TD that has different wall/galley wall thickness (3/4" and 1/2" ply)? The R4 ($99), the R3 ($40), the Kreg Jig mini ($11) or a different mfg's jig?

The R4, looks like the top of the line, but it may be overkill or possibly cumbersome. I'm not sure if the R3 handles different wall thickness.

I used the R3, my walls are 1 1/4, only used it on the framing which is 3/4. I see we are neighbors as well

I got the R4, main reason is I didn't like the look of the flimsy sides on the R3. Any of them will handle the same thickness of wood, it more a matter of ease of placement of the jig. The bench mount option on the R4 is nice but for mobile use the R4MS would be the quickest setup.

Bottom line they all work it's just a matter of how quickly you want to be able to place the jig and drill.

I have #K4
I have tried using with 1/2 " thick wood and 3/4" thick wood.
In my experience. it works pretty good with 3/4" thick wood.
Also, in my experience, it doesn't work very well with 1/2" thick wood.
I would definently not recommend the jig for 1/2" thick wood.

The guy who invented this should be a millionare,if he's not we should take up a collection.I don't know how that i made so many years without one,and now it scares me if i start running low on screws or my bit gets a little dull.

I really like the Harbor freight jig. It's built very well and has great reveiws. Also priced right.

I think the Harbor Freight jig is a better jig than the Kreg, I have both. However it is more expensive and doesn't come with great instructions.

The HF jig really is made for stationary use on a bench, if you need something you can move around like the little Kreg it won't work for that.

The Kreg Jr. worked for me in every situation. It is adjustable so I doubt you will have any problem with this terrific device.

Thanks Nathan! That's what I was looking for, somebody that has actually used both brands. I know all the good things (some not so good) that have been said about the Kreg, but the HF tool sure looks more robust.

As far as the HF cost. It sometimes is on sale, and with a 20% off coupon, it's about the same price (or less) than the Kreg.

Most everything at HF has lousy instructions, but I found a u-tube video on using the HF jig. Your point about bench mount vs portable may lead me to the kreg tool anyway.

Has anyone had any luck using non pocket hole screws which are expensive?

Porter Cable makes a pocket hole jig as well. Seems overly complicated to me but it has a quick release clamp to hold the wood etc...Of course it's priced at over $200.

Home Depot has a no name brand mini pocket hole jig similar to the Kreg one that is all aluminum for $20-$30.
