possible to use regular house windows, non rv?

Postby working on it » Sun Oct 30, 2011 2:26 pm

I was at orange box looking for tools, lumber, anything available for use in my ever-changing build plans.... Looked at the small aluminum 24"x12" sliding/screened window for $30. For possible use in each door (32" minimum width). I can't find (yet) any local source for used/cheap alternatives for new trailer-specific doors or windows, so this looks good to me as a window frame at least. I don't think I would trust "house glass" on the road, so I would replace with Uvex or Racing plexiglass. Has anyone used this type of non-RV frame? Will the structure withstand the vibrations? My searches are not successful, so I'm asking outright.

I don't see why not.

My purchased plans called for "house windows" from HD.

Quite a few people here use "shed windows" (usually from ebay) as well.

We used jalousie windows from Atlantic Shed in MA. Love them, and no problems with them. Being able to keep them open in the rain was a must, and we just like the look of jalousies. The price was also right.

when I was building #1, I was always looking at the storm window display, the display windows were smaller than stock and thought they would have been the perfect size for a teardrop.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

I bought a display of six mini storm windows at a hardware / lumberyard closing sale. Two went into chubby and one is in my 4 x 7. The 2 in Chubby have 5 - 6 thousand miles on them without a problem from vibration. However I did break one when some dummy forgot to latch the door and it swung open at a stop and hit the clearance lite. This one pane of single strength plate glass was changed out with plexiglass but only because of my forgetfulness. They are double hung with a triple track of the top or bottom can be left open and screen will cover either.

Thanks for your replies. Another question here...instead of replacing the brittle single-pane "house" glass with plexi, laminated, or tempered glass, would using the safety/security type window film on the single-pane be legal for motor vehicle use? I don't know the laws pertaining to it, but I don't wish to have a pane break and cut up anyone's tires. I think the window film would work, plus it is tinted and uv resistant, and a lot easier than replacing the standard glass. Has anyone done this?

I just ordered last week 2 14"x21" shed windows from ebay. 64 bucks for both shipped. They have safety glass. Haven't gotten them in yet, should be here end of week or early next.
