The Bungalette; 2006-2011

Postby Loader » Sun Nov 13, 2011 8:11 am

Well, it was finally time. The Bungalette is no more.

Yesterday morning was the start of the teardown of our first teardrop. The Bungalette served us very well, and introduced me to building these little trailers we all love so much. I learned a lot building The Bungalette, and it allowed me to make improvements on number 2; The Blue Yonder.

I started by stripping down hardware and a couple little parts of The Bungalette I plan to keep.

Then came time to breakout my Dewalt Reciprocating saw

Five years of using The Bugalette took its toll, in part because of my lower cost material section (heck wasn't sure I was going to like these tiny trailers!) But over those years, The Bungalette never let us down on the road, kept us warm and dry at night, and always garnered attention at stops.

In a small way, The Bungalette will live on in a future trailer, you see, she was an organ donor and much of the hardware will be reused.

Since I shared many photos and comments throughout the build of The Bungalette, I thought I'd share the teardown.

Although The Bungalette is gone, we will remember all the good times we had.

Like I mentioned, the years took a toll on the tear. A little water damage on the outer layer of ply (was painted with marine paint). Sure, could have been repaired by sanding, filling and glassing. But, my daughter and her husband have expressed interested in building their own teardrop, so they will get all the donor parts (windows, handles, lights, hinges, etc).

That had to be hard to do, mentally not physically. Been thinking of redoing some things on #1 (the Hyde-away)but never considered going that far, hmmm
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

That is so sad... :crying2:

Another teardrop gone.

Hopefully she did not give her life in vain, and that the next generation will out-do your first build efforts. Make sure you help them learn from your 'mistakes'..and good luck with your newest build!

She was a good ship. We'll remember her fondly.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

I see some nice insulation in the roof...I was looking at mine yesterday and was thinking about sneaking some insulation in where I could (without skinning it!)

Thanks for having my back Scott! I appreciate it.

Slow,

I don't need the money to fund a second build, in fact my second build has already been out camping at LCG VI. ( see my build thread ) As I have said early in the post, The Bungalette was showing some serious signs of water damage on the outer layer of the ply, perhaps I used too low a quality of plywood. Who knows.

Not all things in life are about making a profit, I figure I invested right at 2000 bucks into the build, that comes to 400 per year or approximately 34 bucks a month for the time I've had it. Not so bad if you ask me when compared to the cost of other hobbies or monthly expenditures.

Although I appreciate your concerns about me making a buck on my first trailer, as Scott said, it really is up to me what I do with my personal property. I have chosen to give the parts to my daughter and her husband to build their own teardrop. I'm certain by sharing the lessons I have learned over the past years (limited experience it may be) they will build a very high quality tear that will last them for many many years. Again, it isn't always about the money!

Standup, I think it was best to tear it down as compared to selling.

Thanks Tony, she was a good one, lots of fun!

Dragon fire, I'm sure their tear will be a good one.

Aaron, it was hard at first, then reason over emotions.....It was the right thing to do.

Jeff, I do like that saw....perhaps I need. New belt sander.

Didn't mean to start up any controversies, just wanted to share the end of the story with those that encouraged me so much during the build.

It was a little, but it will be rebuilt in an even better way! Thanks Standup Guy!

Thought about it for a second however, due to living within city limits, it would have been frowned upon!

She's not really gone...just a noble "organ donor". I think your choice was perfect for your family. Your daughter and her husband I'm sure are appreciating the financial head start on their own tear.
