Anyone with painted sides and EPDM roof?

Just seein if anyone out there has done, or know someone who has done, a teardrop with white painted sides and the white EPDM roofing? I'm thinking to stay within my budget I am going to finish my benroy build with the white EPDM roofing (from Ebay seller) and using the Rustoleum Enamel paint in gloss white for the sides. And then trimming the corner edges, door openings, and doors with a 3/4" aluminum trim. I'd like to do all aluminum but just can't justify the extra few hundred dollars right now.

If anyone has done the above exterior combo please post your thoughts and some pics to help me settle my mind!

I think if you did the painted sides the way a car would be painted with a few coats Primer then color and then a finish coat while sanding in between Know-body would know unless you told them

I'm not worried about a less than perfect finish (ie: not glass smooth is ok). The Rustoleum Enamel is the same paint that Zach used on his URABUS convertible build and his has a slight texture like when you paint the walls in your house and it looks good. I was more concerned how the gloss white paint looked against the EPDM which is more of a matte finish. Probably won't even tell but I was just curious. If I do it this way I plan on sealing the walls with a coat or 2 of CPES, then 2 coats of primer, light sanding, and 2 or 3 coats of paint. And then Sikaflex sealant along the entire perimeter of the EPDM with a slight overhang (1/4") down the walls and trimmed with aluminum angle.

Hi Robbie,

Planovet painted the sides of his teardrop (after/over CPES) and used aluminum on the roof.

Thanks Tom. I've looked at Planovets build and his paint job is amazing! I looked into it but can't find any local distributors so shipping it would be costly and its a multi-part system where as the Rustoleum is a single part paint that costs about as much as regular house paint. I know you get what you pay for but if I was gonna spend a bunch on paint I'd just go back to aluminum.

Robbie, you brought up some good points. I initially wanted to use aluminum for the sides but I could not find the size of aluminum I needed in the color red. So the backup plan was to paint.

The paint I used was pricey but I was able to find it locally to avoid shipping costs. The main reason I picked that particular paint is that it was the same paint they used on my trailer and I wanted it to match. Otherwise I may have used a different paint.

The type of paint is important but the preparation is also important. Take your time and do it right and the results will reflect that.

Well whatever reason you chose it, it came out looking like glass! I would love to use the Valspar like you did because it seems to have great durability and protective qualities. The Rustoleum I mentioned seems like its a scaled back version of the Valspar. More of a heavy duty enamel instead of a regular paint. And Zach had great luck with it on his old trailer.

Now I need to convince the wife to agree with the paint and rubber plan. I never thought I'd have to try and convince the wife to go with a cheaper option!

Why not put a layer of fiberglass on the roof and then paint the whole thing with the same paint?

You might consider canvas coating the sides and roof and then painting the whole thing.

That's what I did on our tear (horny towd), and we really like how it looks. It isn't smooth, but has the weave showing. the canvas did a great job covering up the cheap knotty plywood on the sides.

we used flat paint since Kat wanted that, but there's no reason you couldn't use gloss paint.

Robbie, another option to consider is FRP pannels, I have them on my Ben Roy and they have held up great for the last 3 years, they are not expensive and are easy to clean. I got mine from the orange box store

Hey Dave was looking at your pics and it lloked like you kept the FRP on the sides but you either painted your roof and added AL as a rock guard or did you go all AL on the roof and cover the FRP? Did you rebuild your hatch or is that a second tear?
