Tiny Cargo trailer conversion...???

Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

GPW,

You can get heavy-duty drawer slides that are rated to 500 pounds and probably greater. The ones I've seen - the heavy duty ones - are available in stainless steel. I'm not sure what the bearings are though. They're metal, but I'm not sure if they are stainless.

The drawer type slides attach through the faces. I've seen TV drawer slides that have a 90 degree backet that would allow you to attach them to the top or bottom.

The part I can't get my head around is how to design the seals. I keep going with an inner flange design, almost like a drawer face, that would seal around the inside wall of the trailer. The problem is that I can't resolve how to have lower part of the flange and have it clear the supporting structure of the drawer.

Sure wish we could see some more details of this.

BTW - the idea that keeps coming to me is not a slide out to the side, but one that extends out over the tongue when camping.

Keep the ideas coming GPW.

Take care,
Tom

Tom , Big Drawer slides ... That’ll work !!! Cool idea , Thanks !!! 8) I think the seals would need some type of rubber flap outside and the usual weatherstripping in and out on the flanges of the “boxâ€

I would think you would require a platform on the inside at the same height as the underside of the slide out box bottom. The platform would need to be as deep as the un-extended shelf slider. The platform could be "rabitted out" to make the drawer slider flush with the platform. Since you want the slide out as a bed extender this would work well.

You could even have a set of drawer sliders in the top of the slide out box too. You could make an overhead cabinet that would extend down from the ceiling to be flush with this set of sliders.

exactly like thatGPW! Only you do end up with the box extender being atleast the thickness of the plywood higher than the inner bed. Also I could see building cabinets over the bed too and placing a heavy duty shelf slider into the underside of those cabinets. Lets face it you will not need gobs of headroom over the bed and you will not have much else for storage elswhere so it might be something to consider. Looks like you have it figured out.

Remember Roly Nelson's little 3x3 trailer? He had a pivoting extension instead of a slider. That was very simple. You just need feet room like maybe 2.5'.

Have a look at the thread:

Sorry for the bad paint quick sketch but maybe you can get the idea of it:
