Looking for Coleman stove

Postby txdograncher » Tue Nov 29, 2011 7:09 pm

I'm trying to locate a Coleman auto trailer hot plate for my 1936 Hayes Crusader Deluxe restoration. These "hot plates" operate on the same principle as a Coleman camp stove but they are generally porcelain coated with either heavy steel or cast iron grates and have a brass fuel tank that mounts on the front of the stove. Some may have been painted. They came in a two or three burner model. If you know anyone that has one they would sell, please contact me at [email protected]

Thanks-

Ron

You mean one of these? It's a '37 though.

Hi Doug-

Yes, one of those. Any chance that one is for sale?

Thanks-

Sorry, I just finished it for my bread loaf build. They're out there, but not real easy to find. This is a model 371. Doug

Doug,

I found my Hayes Crusader Deluxe out west and hauled it back to Texas. Not very many of them in existance, about eleven I know of. Gathering parts for a full restoration back to original. This trailer had a mahogany interior and one of the first 110V mechanical refrigerators. original refrigerator still in it, but Coleman hot plate A.W.O.L.

Where did you find your Coleman 371. If you come across another hot plate, would appreciate you keeping me in mind. Some of the other model numbers are 370A, 386 and 387. It doesn't have to be a 1936. Anything from the 30's would work.

Thanks,

Ron

Ron,

I'd suggest that you just keep an eye on eBay for a while and see what comes along, what you're seeking is offered more frequently than you may expect! There is actually a camp stove sub-category on eBay, see category path below:

Sporting Goods > Outdoor Sports > Camping & Hiking > Cooking Supplies > Stoves

There are generally about 4,000 camp stoves for sale on eBay at any given time so I search for "antique" or "vintage" in the camp stove category and that seems to pare down the search results to a more manageable level.

I got my '46 Kit back in July and since then I've been able to acquire a Model 395 3-burner hot plate and a Model 391A 2-burner hot plate via eBay. Both of mine were produced post-war, but both were cataloged pre-war as well. Keep your eyes open and what you're after will come along sooner or later!

Another option that would be "period correct" for you is one of the old Griswold cast iron propane stoves:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-2-burne ... 0820114895

The stoves are pretty easy to come by, but finding a PC propane cylinder will likely be something of a challenge...

BTW: could you post a photo of the Hayes Crusader Deluxe? I couldn't find anything with my quick search.

Regards-HW

HW,

Thanks for the leads. My '36 Hayes did not have a propane system on it. It had water tank, kerosene space heater vented through the roof and wired for 110V shore power. The original fridge could be kept cold by inserting block ice or plugging into shore power. No propane system is the reason for the Coleman hotplate. I'll see if I can post a photo of what my Hayes looked liked when I found it and also a photo of one restored.

Thanks,

Ron
