Central Texas Geese Update!

Postby JuneBug » Sat Dec 17, 2011 11:55 am

Took a stroll in my neighborhood park late yesterday afternoon. Hiking along, and deep in thought, I kept hearing a sound on the edge of my consciousness -- then suddenly realized it was the sound of migrating geese high overhead. I could hear them but not see them. In the neighborhood walking home with more of the sky visible, I was treated to the sight and sounds of three big flocks of honkers heading south southeast. Can't remember how to tell Canada Geese from Snow Geese on the wing but it is quite wonderful to see them high in the sky in formation.
They were in a "V" formation, but not a balanced one; there was a long line of geese on the east side, with just a few on the west side.

Would you say they were right wingers or left wingers?

I was walking down by the Rio Grande in the South Valley this afternoon and had a flock of Canadian Geese fly in from the Northeast between the mountains through Tijeras canyon and land in the river, there must have been a couple of hundred of them... Lotta noise.

Saw a flock yesterday, headed north. The locals don't usually start until there is no more grazing and the open water isn't. The are beautiful on the wing but generally considered a pest with, shall we say whitewash. They are basically flying cows.

Yea Rob, ours only migrate to the next park or golf course. It's so bad that some golf courses are hiring dogs to chase them off.

We have Canadian Geese here in NE Ohio,----but they have never been to Canada. And they don't leave Ohio unless in the back of a Wildlife officers' truck. They tend to stay where the are hatched, so it's easier to move them in the egg, rather in feathers. Flying cows yes, but at least on the wing their exhaust pipe is closed. People wouldn't think the flying wedge was so pretty if they bombed us from the air. Although hunting might be better and they would be less of a nuisance.

Anyway Have a Merry Christmas, and make sure the goose is cooked for dinner.

They aren't "Canadian Geese" they are "Canada Geese." That's the name of the bird. We have them here in the SF Bay Area year around, but many come here for the warm winters.

And yes, they are flying cows in their ability to ruin a park or playing field.

I want the city to allow residents to trap them for food, but.....

When you see geese flying in a V formation why is it that one leg of the V is always longer than the other?

Because there's more geese on that side...

Yup, us birders say "they are only Canadian if they have a valid passport." On the wing, Canada geese call or "honk" all the time in flight. If you heard something, it was probably Canadas. Plus they are much more common. Snow geese have a peculiar flight pattern, they fly at different altitudes in formations, so they appear to be undulating, or flying in a wave. It is really quite spectacular when seen in mass. I have seen thousands take off and fly at one time in Northern California in January. Like a seen from "The Birds." Canadas are also generally larger. By your description, I would say they were Canadas, but who know if they are actually Canadian. Check with border patrol to see if group came through customs.
