Re: Cigar Box Guitar build....... New Youtube clip loaded !!

As far as a straightforward build, it can be. You're all now talking my realm :) I own many many guitars & amps (don't even ask how many), 5 of them being cigarbox, having self made CBG to 2 Daddy Mojo's(a 4 string and 6 string resonator). I also owned a boutique guitar store for many years, I was the first dealer for Daddy Mojo and dealt exclusively in the "Ferrari's" of the guitar world (Suhr, Caparison, Framus, Grosh, D'Aquisto, Trussart, Bad Cat, Bogner, CAE, Etc)

A few things to simply your first build.
1. Make a 3 string, it's the traditional cigarbox and also easier to learn on. Once you get the hang of it, move up to a 4 string.
2. As far as the neck being round, it only needs to be round if you plan to play it held and not in your lap. Most that I own I play in my lap and they are square necks.
3. As far as scale length, 24.75" is short scale and used primarily for a spongier feel to make string bending more easy. 25.5" scale length results in higher string tension. Long scale also results in more volume due to the higher tension. Unless you are using a hard wood (maple, etc) go for short scale. Also keep in mind there are MANY tunings you can use, some of which put an excessive amount of tension on the neck. Make sure the wood you select for it is defect free.
4. Frets, I would suggest not fretting on first build. Without a few specialized tools for dressing and leveling the frets they will most likely be uneven and result in buzzing, etc. Your build tolerances also have to be more precise due to the use of frets, making minor errors turn into a major problem. When fretting, measurements are in thousands of an inch to give you an idea of how precise.

I went in way over my head with the first build I did many years ago and end up scrapping it. I tried a 4 string fretted, without any experience in building my own guitar. If you just go for a simple 3 string non fretted, it will be a much more enjoyable process for you first build. My 2nd build was a 3 string non fretted and a very enjoyable process.

I think J.J. Cale played a CBG when starting out. I was also curious as to who else played one...

I guess this should probably be in "Off Topic" but it's a cool thread anyway...

Last summer at one of the Jefferson State gatherings, one of the guys had a strumstick he had built. His craftsmanship was superb and it sounded great I really liked it
and I thought it would make a nice project for the long winter. I started this in October but I'm not finished yet.

Image Image

I decided to go fretless for this first attempt. And just three strings. It has a piezo pickup, which actually sounds quite 'nasty' (in a good way) through the amp.
I was going for quick and cheap here and I didn't have a cigar box, so I built a box with leftover trailer building stuff. Works for me.. :)
Used an old, cleaned up cabinet hinge for the string saddle. It only cost me about $20 (mostly for the strings, piezo buzzer, and the tuning pegs, and a couple of bolts)
not bad for a cheap winter project and a lot of fun too.

This place for supplies:
https://www.cbgitty.com/cubecart/

The strings are too high on it right now, and I'm no good at fretless. So I think I'll fret it...like a dulcimer.

And one more thing, these things are kinda like tiny trailers, you're planning the next one before you're finished with the first!

Beautiful work on the hand-made box, I really like the sound hole design. Gitty's the place for supplies, I order from him too. Yeah, very addicting. I started out thinking I would only build one, I'm working on #'s 13 thru 16 now and still building amps. Cases come next.

As is often the case, thanks guys for the interest and comments.

Often it is you guys who make comments who keep projects alive, or make me try again when I cock it up.

On Thursday evening I posted a Wanted ad on my local Freecycle for a Broken/unwanted Accoustic or electric guitar.
By Friday late, I had been offered a half size accustic with a body that had delaminated a long time ago. One of the tuning screws are missing as well.
So a perfect donor for this build.

Potentially leaving some spares to build a "Diddley Bow" with as well, as they really fascinate me for some reason, as they are so basic, yet capable of such expression.

Anyone remember a film/TV programme called Twin Peaks (yes, she was nice too) the music from that reminds me of diddley bow sounds.

Here is a sample:

I love this DB that this girl built, she plays and builds various instruments well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqgTNNrs ... re=related

And then a PRO.... Keep in mind what he has to play with.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fXI_o6I ... re=related

This means that the other guitar I had in the loft will be safe till another day. Either to be given away to a deserving person, sold on, or broken for the next CBG, which could or should be electrified.

I feel pretty chuffed about it, still, we will only know if I actually get to be successfull once someone who knows their way around guitars has it under their hands

Image

I love the brand name... even though made in Romania.

Image

Someone had mentioned I should use the whole of the neck, so as to keep the frets in etc.

Feels a bit like cheating to me, and not being musical at all, I would not know the difference anyway.

With tomorrow being Christmas, I suspect it will be a few day before I get to start measuring etc with this build.
Greetings from England.

Rian.

Not a lot to report, having another lazy day today.

Had a call from the Mum in Law last night, and ended up in the shed making parts for a "Totem Pole" for her, still busy assembling and finishing the parts for it, and will post in the woodturning thread later when completed.

I did however manage to cut the ballustrade into a basic 2"x1" length, with some of the damage still in place. I hope to use shaping to get rid of most of the damage, if not all.

Going to take this a lot slower than I had originally thought, as I want it to work first time out.

I am also thinking of "BUILD No 2" already, which should be electrified.... so will need an amp, as I gave my amp (another tip find) away a few years ago in a fit of kind heartedness, which of course gave me a buzz when the recipient proved himself to be a worthy recipient by an impromptu session.

Thinking of either building a small amp, or looking for a knackered one to restore.

Right, today I was meant to go ride a trial, but when I got up at 6.30 the weather was unpleasant, and an hour later it was worse, cold, windy and drizzle rain.... so I made an executive decission: Cancel the ride. I think Tom was happy too, even though he had already had his brekkie by 7.45.

I did some stuff around the house and then went to the shed and also to scrounge in the rubbish our next door neighbour but two has tipped over his fence before.... yes, he is a council tennant and does not give a toss.

I had previously found some usefull scrap there, but today the pickings were pretty scarce.

I did however find and old drill box lid, which may become the lid of my next CBG, and a rusty spanner to turn into a percussion tool for the Diddley Bow I want to make (I actually started on it already) and a 10mm drillbit, that has been turned into a punch for the woodwork stuff.

Image

I also found half of a self closing hinge......

Image

Cut it to shape with the grinder and started to clean up the other bits.

Image

The hinge will become the end of the DB, where the string attaches down the fixed end.

Hole drilled and a small groove cut in to hold the string in place.

Image

The metal from the hinge is really hard, so between the grinder, hacksaw and a couple of metal files, I tried to create a bit of a flame theme.

Image

Next up I trimmed the timber down to size and then sanded the lot down to size-ish.

Image

Dismantled the Donor guitar and cleaned the bits I could.

Image

I also measured out the wood so that I could cut and invert the timber, and so create a swept back neck for the tuning machine heads... which in my case will be 2 aside.

Image

Cut on the bandsaw.

Image

Laid the Cigar box on top to get an idea of placement and spacing.

Image

Next up ..... well, you tell me what these are for.... ?

Image

Then I offered the neck to the box to get placement sorted and planned.

Image

Measured, and cut with a hacksaw, mainly because the Cigar Box is reasonably fragile. The blade also takes away less material.

Image

Followed by using a wide wood chisel and a specially made up support to remove the excess material from the sides.

Image

Perfect.... Tight fit.

Image

Followed by cross cutting the recess where the lid will sit once it is closed.

Image

Sharp tools help, remove all the excess wood.

Image

Mr Happy at this point.

Image

Measure and drill string holes.

Image

Figured out the purpose of the rivets yet?

They will be to stop the strings from eating their way through the wood.

American quarter there for size perspective (about the same as a 10p piece) the cut recess still need to be smoothed and sanded.

Image

Holes cut for the lid, with grommets placed in position. Also got plank ready for DB.

Image

Last thing to do before coming to the house 2 hours late for my dinner, which was fortunately not in the bin..... Nicola is almost Saintly with the way she deals with my getting sucked into the workshop and stuff I am making. She tollerates me in a way that keeps me wondering if I did something good in a previous life.

I set up and clamped the timber sections after glueing them, then clamped the angled section together, will leave it for 12-24 hrs.

Image

I have made some modifications while I have been building this CBG, one has been the indecission of doing a 3 or 4 string instrument.

I have ultimately settled on a 4 stringer, with 2 machine heads on each side..... leaving me with one tensioner for the DB, as one of the knobs were missing from the outset.

I have cut the holes in the body, and to show just how little I know, I am not sure if I can still go electric with the holes cut into the lid, or if that limits me to doing an accoustic instrument ??

The plan is to sneak over to Maplins Electronics tomorrow to get some of the bits I need for the DB and to electrify this CBG, if it cannot happen, then the next one will have a custom built box with the old drill lid as cover.

I guess it is bedtime now.....

I photograph guitars and stringed instruments for a living, but I've never enjoyed watching an instrument come together they way I am enjoying watching you build this cigar box guitar.

I hope it sounds as good as it is built when finished.
