Lots of changes coming rapidly. I'm sure your daughter will enjoy the Nook, but it is only a matter of time before she will want to upgrade. The Nook and Kindle are stepping stones to the iPad or Macbook Air, so start saving your pennies. Everything that runs on the ebook readers can run on the iPad, but the iPad has infinitely more capability. That's what the kids want. Heck, our 13-month-old granddaughter uses the iPad. It's amazing to witness. :)

BTW, the reason you don't see anyone in an Amazon store is because there aren't any such physical stores. But, of course, you know that are are just playing with us. Right?

Not sure on the Kindle fire but on my kindle touch, the ad is just on the home page(the page that lists the books you have), it is just at the bottom, and doesn't show up when reading a book. It doesn't bother me, and some of the ads are for $1 books, another was for a free audible book, if you are interested in a certain ad, just touch it, and details are emailed with no obligation.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

im suspecting an Ipad is coming in the next 5 years. technology changes so fast, in 5 years we might be able to fold up an ipad and put it in our shirt pocket.

Not fold, roll. :D

Google roll up monitor sometime. They are doing some wild stuff with capacitive ink and plastics.

I absolutely love my Kindle! Finally, I get to read what I want rather than what the students were reading. Recently, my Kindle just froze. Called them, tried all the fixes, didn't work, they sent me a new one and I'll send the broken one back. Have over a hundred books on mine since April. Usually read two plus hours a day. (I'm retired) Like being able to enlarge the type. That reduces eyestrain. Then after reading for a couple of hours I can focus my eyes at a distance. I go to doctors way too often. With the Kindle I don't mind the usual wait. The ease of one click buying of a book is really 21st century. Think also of all the trees saved.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned about the kindle 3G is it's FREE browser. I bought my wife the E-ink which I think is still the best for reading keyboard WiFi w/3G a year ago. I don't like wireless routers, so no WiFi at home.
The 3G allow my wife to get her books anytime, anywhere there is cell service. The FREE 3G (WiFi also) browser is pretty cool. I can check my work E-mail, read this forum, and do what ever else I need to while traveling without paying for cell service. It's not so easy to use, but it's better than nothing, and it's more likely to be with us.

I'm curious. Why don't you like wireless routers? Going wireless when available avoids carrier costs. It would seem that you are spending money unnecessarily.

If this is addressed to me... my 82 year old mother absolutely loves it. She "borrows" books from the county library regularly. Her arthritic hands have no fatigue holding the nook, as compared to a book, which she constantly has to put down to stretch her hands.

Her only complaint is that she can't figure out how to look up Bible verses quickly. I bought her a copy of the NIV Bible so she could use it in church, but she can't find things fast enough. It has also presented some challenges to my father, getting files back and forth between computer and nook, but at 84, he's figured almost all of it out without help from any of us younger folk.

Mike,
I don't like wireless routers as far as my home use because they are slower, can be hacked, and fail frequently. I have no problem running cat5 cable when needed from my cheap wired router.

As far as carrier costs, I don't have any with the Kindle 3G. After paying for the kindle itself, it has free 3G, no carrier cost at all. Now, this isn't as useful as a cell phone or tablet with (carrier costs) 3G/4G, but books can be downloaded anywhere, and the included Internet browser is handy, but only for infrequent use.

The bottom line: The kindle 3G is not a replacement for a cell phone, tablet, or Lap Top. It is simply a very efficient book reader with a few extras. I hate carrier charges of any kind, that's why I have a prepaid cell phone that costs me $8 month and accumulates unused minutes which I have almost $400 presently. Did I mention... I'm cheap!!

Larry,

Sorry to hear that your neighborhood is so unsafe that wireless routers are insecure. Are you a gamer who finds 50 Mbps wireless speeds too slow? Cat5 ain't cheap either, but once it is built into your home, I suppose it is nice if you don't mind all the extra wiring or need for ethernet ports on your various devices.

Perhaps when you expand your collection of mobile devices beyond e-readers you will rethink the idea of going wireless in your home. For example, we love broadcasting audio, video, pictures, etc. to our AppleTV from desktop, laptop, iPhone, iPod, and iPad whenever we like. Great to have the big screen TV and superior speakers via our receiver. Also, we transmit music around the house and to remote wireless routers outside for music there on the exceptional Apple boom box. We iChat with family quite a bit on the mobile, laptop, and desktop devices too. Nice not to be tethered to a cable. Vive la liberté.

Wireless is easily secured, at least to the point a home network need to be.
It's never going to be as fast as a wire, because wireless is shared bandwidth. Still it's more than enough for most application.

My two favorite things about ebook are that I can carry a wide variety of reading material with me wherever I go, and I don't have to make room for bookshelves anymore!
The more stuff I take along, the more time I spend taking care of my stuff!

Mike,
We don't all live in gated communities, but if you think your wireless connections are completely safe  I do feel sorry for you!!

No need to expand my mobile devises as I already have SUPERIOR hard wired sound/video separates. I guess if you don't know much about simple wiring using pennies per foot cat 5 cable, and quality component interconnects, wireless might be fine for your very simple needs!!

Streaming all that compressed garbage wirelessly, thinking it's just great... oh well. Apple sheeple even think I-Tunes is wonderful. "superior speakers via our receiver" Perhaps someday you will expand your collection of audio equipment and get beyond the "Receiver" However, hearing and vision are the first to go, so it may be too late.

Have a great new Year! I-Tunes and all( just turn down the volume on that "RECEIVER", you'll be fine)

You're right, Larry. I'm not an audiophile, but I do like the convenience and flexibility afforded by mobile over a range of devices. I'm sure others would appreciate these options too.

Can you really notice the difference between music sampled at up to 256 bits in AAC and what? There are lots of factors that enter the sound quality/experience equation.

BTW, I lost all hearing in my right ear over 6,000 hertz in the Army back in the Vietnam era. M-16 rifles have a very high pitch and it explodes right near your ear. 155mm howitzers, mortars, and 50 caliber machine guns probably took their toll too, but they also kept me safe enough to be here having this conversation.

You must know that wireless networks at home can be protected. I hope others don't latch on to your paranoia. And, no, living in a gated community is not for reasons of security, it's a lifestyle choice to be with other persons of a similar age.

The only secure wireless system, is one that's unplugged! However, I use wireless with encryption, and while I know it's not 100% safe, the odds of someone bothering to hack in my neighborhood is rather slim. Two of my neighbors have wide open connections.

I figure I am much more likely to have my house burglarized, in which case they would have my actual computers..

I wired my entire house years ago with cat5. If I remember correctly back then a 500' spool was under $40, so it certainly is inexpensive. I have a couple computers hooked up with cable, but for some that change location frequently, wireless is much easier.

I am on my third wireless router in the last 10 years, so I wouldn't say they are terribly unreliable, but I've never had a nic go bad in any computer I've ever owned.
