You're too modest. Certainly, your opinions are worth a bit more, even on an inflation-adjusted basis.

Can you really notice the difference between music sampled at up to 256 bits in AAC and what? There are lots of factors that enter the sound quality/experience equation.

BTW, I lost all hearing in my right ear over 6,000 hertz in the Army back in the Vietnam era. M-16 rifles have a very high pitch and it explodes right near your ear. 155mm howitzers, mortars, and 50 caliber machine guns probably took their toll too, but they also kept me safe enough to be here having this conversation.

You must know that wireless networks at home can be protected. I hope others don't latch on to your paranoia. And, no, living in a gated community is not for reasons of security, it's a lifestyle choice to be with other persons of a similar age.

Mike,
I fully understand the convenience and flexibility of wireless connections, I just feel they do not offer the best sound & video, but everything is relative.

Actually, I can't even listen to Apples 256 AAC. I just prefer uncompressed music.

I am sorry for for your hearing loss, especially due to your military service. *****THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!!******

I do know that home wireless networks can be protected, and I also know that nobody can break into my house. Paranoia, maybe, but lets put it this way... I really know better on both accounts. Enough said....

Gated communities: Not for security?.... OK

Again...
Have a Happy New Year!!

Jumping into this -

I got a Kindle for Christmas and as Paul said - I almost have no use for a big PC now. Easy to use and simple.

There are limitations but there is enough to work around it. Looking for some "HACKS" to see what and how I can improve some performance.

Head over to the mobileread forums. Great amount of information there, no matter what device you purchased!

Ratkity, thanks for the pointer to mobileread forums - never found that site. Very cool.

Also helpful:
The eBook Reader Blog
Goodreads (kind of an online book club, where people review the books they've read.)

Hotrod, five school districts around here are part of The 8.5 oz Backpack project, which gave each high school 25-30 of the basic Kindles at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year. The Kindles went to seniors in these small, suburban/rural districts, fully loaded with all of the books they would need for senior year, including their advanced English classes. I've been following them, but since it's an "experiment," I don't have permission to report on their progress until they file their end-of-school evaluations.

I just keep thinking back to high school, and all the books I lugged around - how much easier it would have been to have one of these e-readers instead.

My goal for 2012 is to add to my Nook color at least six of my favorite, most-used cookbooks this year, so that I have them with me when I'm cooking while traveling.

And catching up on my reading is also on the list. ;)

Im thinking when allison gets to college or maybe sooner (5th grader now) all her books will be this way, definately easier to carry... someone earlier said that barnes and noble had been buying up college bookstores, another reason to nook.....

Could have been done years ago...the issue has been the publishers and the deals they have authors locked into. Most can't allow a book to be distributed in any format without allowing the publisher to set the price and control the distribution. One of my favorite fiction authors just went through this battle early last year trying to get his books out in e format. It was interesting to watch his blog as the process unfolded.

I could buy two or three readers and the ebook for the cost of one textbook. Textbook publishing is one of the great scams of the 21st century. I have a daughter finishing her last year of college and we jsut forked over $380 for TWO textbooks! The cost of (college) textbooks has to be close to 25% of the cost of the class now, and it's a completely unneccesary cost!
The more stuff I take along, the more time I spend taking care of my stuff!

Actually, wirelss can be secured. Most people just don't have the resources and knowledge to do it correctly. It requires a multi-tiered defense that is cost prohibitive in a home network environement.

I have spent the last 12 years of my life building corporate networks including wireless access. The last 5, I have had to deal with PCI and SOX regulations.

For most home users a good access point with WPA2 encrytion will do the job. It is just not worth a hackers efforts to try to get past that.
