Some new stuff

Here are a couple of Kamplites I picked up. Both need generators but otherwise look good. I will try Old Coleman Parts first , but if they can't help where do I go?

While I was messing with the Kamplites I decided to fire up my only Military lantern. It went pretty easy. But it really sounds like a jet engine while burning. It really comes ALIVE!

I also put together the first lantern I found in the wild. A 10.00 242C. It had a lot of rust in the tank and I set it aside till latter. Well it got buried in my shop till now. Did the BB trick several times till the fuel ran clean and she fired right up.

Next was a 5101.....Now this I found in an Antique mall which I usually don't have much luck in. But the vent was perfect and the globe is a green logo rising sun. Those 2 pieces were worth the price I paid. Well I decided to see if it would light. There was a mantle on it, so I cracked the fuel knob to listen. I could hear the LP so I shut it off and went for some matches. When I lit it the LP was still in the globe. Wooosh, scared the cr@p out of me. But it burns nice. Does anyone know if these fuel tanks are still available. Kind of a nice lantern.

I'm pretty sure the tank on that 5101 is the same ones that were used with the picnic stoves. I have a couple of em, with some fuel, but they are no longer manufactured. If my memory serves me correctly, it was in the late 90's that the government decided they were too dangerous for us. I have converted one of my picnic stoves to run off of modern bottles. I have two more pink ones, which I have not yet converted.

Hi Paul, Thanks for the info. I was sort of figuring that would be the case. But I wanted the parts. Then the thing lit up and I thought maybe I should not dismantle it. I'll hang it with the rest for now and decide what to do with it.

Nice Kamplites! What makes you think the generators are bad?
They can be cleaned. just be carefull of the tip cleaning wire.
Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Ask yourself these simple questions every time you are in doubt about any action.

The insides , cardboard, is like mush. I can not get the rod back in and I don't want to damage the cleaning tip. I did soak them for a few minutes in Carb cleaner. Don't know if that made it worse or not. But I have done that with the Coleman generators and had success.

I think the 200a gen may fit with the kamplite tip cleaner in it. or you could take the cardboard from another gen and stick it in your kamplite.
Another thing that may work is to run a small drill through yours and clean it out.
Maybe the cardboard from a 200 will replace the bad.

You can also Wrap a small ga. copper wire into a coil to replace the "cardboard" That will keep the lantern from surging.

I read that Mark....need to try it on a lantern. I've got a load of what I think are dead generators...would be nice to save the $$ on new ones. Doug
