Satellite Dish Setup

Postby bdosborn » Mon Jan 09, 2012 11:10 pm

Well I couldn't help myself and I put a Dish Network receiver in the Boxcar. Despite the fact that we had one in the Teardop that I hardly ever used. I used an old dish that came with the house with a PVC ground mount that I made. I'm getting pretty good at setting up the dish, it only take me about 15 minutes.

Image

The 311 receiver only draws 12 watts so the PV panel easily keeps up with it. I mounted the receiver underneath the front cupboards. Its AC only so I use an inverter to power it :

The extra receiver costs me $6 per month and I plug into the dish mounted on the house when we're home. Jean thinks I'm weird but I like to watch TV in the trailer ( in the garage). :wacky

I just looked at my Directv receiver and it draws 24 watts at 120 volts so I expect it would take about three amps to run an inverter and the receiver.

Given that you can only watch so much TV before it numbs your mind I agree the power requirements should be easy to manage.

One can use a computer with an adapter but I suspect a dedicated dvd player with inputs might use less power. How much does your player draw?

Cheers,

Gus

Our DVD player is kind of an energy hog, just the screen draws around 3 amps and using the DVD adds another amp.The portable we had before the ceiling mount only a used little less than an amp. The portable was optimized to run off a small battery while the ceiling mount definitely is not. Still, we only watch TV for an hour or so an evening and that's around 5 amp-hrs. Very manageable with 2 golf cart batteries and a solar setup. I'll replace the DVD with a laptop if it ever dies as it draws and costs about the same but does a lot more.

I set ours up (Dish network) to use a three LNB antenna on four suction cups that can be stuck to the top or sides of Compass Rose or set up on the ground, the same mount can be used with the Jack TV antenna for over the air TV. We have yet to use it mind you but my thinking was bad weather or to be able to check weather in remote locations.

I haven't been camping since I hung up my backpack. Sleeping in a trailer is "resort living" to me.

Have you got a picture of that mount? I need to upgrade the dish to a dual LNB. I've got the dish but I can't catch two birds with the PVC mount as there's no way to easily level the dish. I was thinking of going with a tripod setup like this one:

I think I have $30 in a used dish and the suction cup. I painted the dish blue with the face mat white It will get a CR sticker eventually.

Hmm, nice setup. I'm gonna have to think about stealing that idea.
