Planning alum covering for 1/4 Nelson, Stacker (help!)

Postby Roly Nelson » Thu Jan 12, 2012 12:55 am

My bright blue and yellow 6ft long stacker, doesn't look right behind my new bright red Chevy Cruze. Therefore I am planning on skinning it with aluminum. As a woodworker, this is a first for me, and I need some info about correct thickness, available supplier in So Calif and bendable moulding. I'm sure it has been mentioned many times somewhere, but just thought I would ask. (Ugh, I hate working with fiberglass,) and now aluminum? It can't be as bad as the itchy stuff. Thanks for any help available. Oh yes, how much weight will be added to my 245 lb toy?

.040" 5052 is a good thickness and alloy for what you want to do.

These guys are great:

Copper and Brass Sales Division
Los Angeles
13338 Orden Drive
Santa Fe Springs, CA 90670
Telephone: 562-623-4444
Sales: 800-926-2600
Sales Fax: 800-926-8310

It comes in 5X12 foot sheets. Each sheet weighs about 25# as I recall. There is a huge price break at 100# so buying 5 sheets is actually cheaper than buying 4. I'd be interested in 1 sheet if we can find buyers for enough to hit 100#.

Cheers,

Gus

Hey, Roly!

What do you have in mind, finish-wise ... mill-finish alum., brushed, polished, or something you can paint red to match the Cruze?

If just mill, brushed, or polished, you can get away with .032" thickness (saving a few pounds), but if you are planning on painting, I'd recommend .040" in white (looks like you've already been given some excellent sources). With all the moldings needed to trim everything out, you'll probably add less than 50# to the trailer.

I've probably go all the moldings you'll need, but we'll need to talk before I can make any recommendations. If you want, give me a call ... I'll be out of town Friday & Saturday, though ... happy to help any way I can, my Friend ... :D ...!

Unicorn Metals 400 E. Lambert Rd, La Habra.
They have tons of new and recycled stock. When I go there it is like a treasure hunt. I get really creative ideas for some of the recycled stuff. They have small stainless sinks that would be ideal for a galley build. They have connex boxes full of plumbing and electrical and so much more!!! www.unicornmetals.com
