Then again, I don't recall hearing any doubled cue stick diddley bows before.

I'll be anxious to hear it amped up and also to read your impression of the impact on your billiards game.

Right, there you go.....

Electric and plugged in.

Some changes to be made, including changing the wires around, hence feedback on sound.
Also need to raise the pickup by about 10mm. This should improve sound and loudness having pickup closer to the wire.

I was reasonably happy with the outcome.

Once the changes are made, it should/could sound a bit cleaner.

Trust me my friend.... living where we do, no technology is fast.

Last nights upload took so long and crashed once, that I left the second attempt overnight loading up.

It just happened that in this case the upload had finished shortly after you posted.

The sound is OK, keep in mind it is in a shop, and the guy was just messing around a bit.

I am busy uploading his 2nd play at the CBG as well, which I think is better than the first one.

Will post that when it eventually is loaded.

Right, there you go, he was just going mad, enjoying challenging hmself and the CBG.

I have agreed to buy a small amp from a guy in Essex, and need to get a cord, then hopefully I will start messing about at home.

I quite liked his comment right at the end of the clip, kinda makes it all worthwhile (not that this has been torture)

This could be the last posting of a Youtube clip until I figure out how to play this thing.

Comments as always , welcome.

Thanks GPW.

I wil have to figure out how to drag a tune out of these things if I am going to build more.

Have been challenged to build a Banjo, so needs a bit more research.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Work has stopped me playing in the shed the last couple of weeks....

Nicola took me to the Cotswolds last weekend for my birthday, and while looking for a wooden wine box to use for an amp build, we found the guy in the specialist wine shop also sold cigars, so I asked him about the boxes and ended up getting two.

He suggested I use the small one to make a banjo, but it seems they need a little different structure.

While out there, we also found some other treasures.... kitchen sink strainers for sound holes, a Church bazaar where I found a decent sized key for £1.50 and a tall shot glass, possibly for a slide, but it is quite thin, so not sure it will work.

Image

Today DHL delivered this 30Watt amp that I had picked up for £30.00 including delivery. They had managed to deliver it with the whole front face shoved backwards but I opened the back and basically forced everything back toward the front.

Hope to get some time to play in the shed tomorrow.

Want to start on the No2 build now.

Some great finds there, Rian!

My best supplier of boxes went out of business so I'll be on the hunt again. I like the looks of the wooden boxes but think the sound of the cardboard boxes is pretty good and sometimes louder. I noticed that Bemuzic has a yellow Don Tomas CBG, same box as yours. I have 5 necks nearly completed, just have to join them to boxes and wire them up.

I've yet to try a shot glass for a slide. A deep-well socket in a size that fits your finger works good, might give that a try too. Thanks for the update and the pics.

Belated Happy Birthday wishes to you from Dewey and me!

Thanks Gary, it was a great day, in spite of working.

So guess it would happen at some time.

Had a couple of mates over today and once Maverick and Mini-Maverick left, Peter and I went to the shed to try out the new diamond dust covered cutters from China on some bottles I had waiting in the shed.

While I masked the bottles, Peter assembled the cutter.

Masking tape around the necks.

My dremmel tool around twice, gently.....

Onto the belt sander to smoothen the edges where cut off.

Brought them inside, plugged in the mini amp I had bought, which is quite crackly, not sureif it is settings or age, or just abused ;D
Sounds great just set on a medium low setting.

So GLASS SLIDES Sorted now.

Thanks for all the tips and advice.

Nice job on the glass slides, Grizz.

I hadn't read the Cigar Box Nation forum in awhile, scanned it today and read your post. Thanks for the many compliments!

You evil, evil people! I come here to learn how to build a teardrop, drool over the custom builds, and just basically associate with like-minded folks who like to camp, and you have to go and post a fantastic thread like this! Now I've spent the last 3 days going through this whole thread, looking at every link posted, going to the CBGNation website and reading durned near every page, and just generally reading everything I can find on CBGs and diddly bows!

I don't even play the guitar and now I want to build one!

Thanks for the new obsession! Like I needed another project that could easily take on a life of its own!

Seriously, though - I love all of your builds. I'm bookmarking all of the references you've posted, ad when I can get a few of my other projects completed, I may try my hand at a diddly bow or two. Who knows? I may even try a CBG. I know a couple of players who would surely appreciate one.

Banjo

Postby nrody » Tue Jan 24, 2012 5:14 pm

Just a thought but a wooden hat box (craft store) or that old cookie (bisket) tin of grandmas might make a neat banjo?

Well, I think it was mentioned before, I needed to raise the pickup on the pool cue Diddley Bow.

Did that last night and plucked the string a few times on Youtube....

I personally do like it a lot more than before.

The amp sounds like it is struggling a bit, but maybe I cannot set the knobs right?
