Shade

Postby GerryS » Sun Feb 12, 2012 9:36 pm

Ok....how do you shade your drop when at a location without trees?

My experience with ezup tents is they make great kites in low winds....I don't want my baby getting beaten by one of these monsters. But I hasn't seen a good alternative....I dont want to spend 2 hours setting up......

When I need to use my First Up for shade, I anchor two corners to the trailer and two corners to a picnic table. Only problem I had was one rather windy night, I was woken up several times because the trailer was a shaking. The First Up survived the night though.

My solution. Most of the setup is pipes that slide into sections I've welded on the frame of the trailer. The setup holds either a 20x20, 20x40, or 20x10 canopy depending on the size of my party. Sometimes just me and the wife. Sometimes the family goes rafting or camping with a dozen people.

Like Paul said, I use two ratchet straps to tie one end to the teardrop. For the other side, I tie it to curbs, stumps trees, or whatever is available. (In a pinch, I'll use stakes.)

I tie ours to whatever I can find. So far so good.
Left it out side at home one night. In the morning
we found it upside down in the driveway. It would
appear that someone tried to fold it up to steal it.
They could not figure it out. They left it there
slightly bent up.

Thanks for the suggestions...I see a couple there that I like. I like the "rail' system to attach a canopy directly to the 'drop.

I'm really paranoid about using any kind of metal fold up tent of any kind. Poles aren't bad, but they are a little more work.

We used to own a concession business...Kettle Corn!!! Man, I miss that stuff... I can't find anyone who makes it with the right kind of corn, good oil, and real sugar any more!!! Everyone wants to use sams-club corn, salad oil, and beet sugar instead of cane -- it REALLY makes a difference!

Ok enough of that rant...back to the canopy...we used to use an industrial designed ez-up, not a flimsy residential model. We almost lost it quite a few times with minor breezes...10 miles per hour is about the limit. It gets more than that and you better be collapsing and removing the top. The damage done by a gust gave me a serious understanding of why vendors at festivals and events seem to charge so much. $1000 to replace a tent not to mention damage to the other vendor that your "parachute" caused.

The "blue tarp" is so noisy --- is there a good source to buy big sheets of ripstop nylon? get a 15x15 sheet of that, a few "eyelets" and some sturdy poles and some rope and you got something!!!

We're acquiring a camp-inn Ultra 560 --- the roof on that guy is insulated --- how much does that deminish the need for shade? compared to air gap or just bendable plywood ceilings? Am I over-engineering again?
