weighing a trailer frame

Am I correct in assuming that if I place a scale under the tongue, take that reading, then place the scale under each wheel, one at a time of course, and record those readings and add the three together, that I will get a fairly accurate number?

Have two blocks the same thickness as the scale and rotate them around as you are doing your measurements. This way gravity, and any angle changes won't affect your final number. It will be a fairly accurate number if done this way.

When you go on a 'test ride' with your trailer,which I'm sure ya will,even if it's just to see it in the side mirrors.Surely,there's a gravel/concrete yard,or some type of 'big truck' lot close by.Those guys have to weigh out before they hit the road.Just 'ask' if you can drop your trailer on the scales to get a true 3 point weight.You'll probably get a grin & a nod.Might have to drop a 5 spot ($) in showin your appreciation.But when completed,scale guy might wanna see when complete.Then ya will get a true certified weight of your trailer.Some folks even hit up a truck stop.And you better believe there's chatter on CB's while thats being done.They wouldn't wanna see ya get an over weight ticket.Just my .02 worth.

Great advice, thank you!

I will get the trailer weighed before taking it out, and in fact before building anything on the frame, but I needed a close guess as it is part of my calculations for axle placement.
It has an attached axle now, but I'm relocating it and it isn't towable yet.

I was looking for a place to powder coat my trailer. Well the trailer store was closed but accross the street was a grain elevator. Well it had a 18 wheeler scale and I "had" to go across it. Next day on the way to work I went sans frame and subtracted the weight.
