Lockable storage for valuables?

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby iplay10us2 » Wed Dec 21, 2011 10:53 am

You could always take your wallet, cell phones, etc in a small fanny pack or backpack and not have to worry.

I either leave my stuff locked in my teardrop or the car, and don't really give it much thought.

Get rid of the dog and leash this guy to the tear instead...

The only thing that will stop anyone from stealing is not finding it. If a thief wants in, they will get in and it only takes seconds to get into a trailer/car/fire safe/etc.

Think my 8 year old grand son could open that up with a paper clip in about 30 seconds....

When choosing a safe for the TV or TD, stay away from "Electronic" safes. The mechanism uses some very iffy mechanical and electronic construction that will not survive long if mounted in a TD or other vehicle. Stick with key operated units.

Dale they do make sturdier versions of this type safe also. But they cost more. There should be a level that even your 10 year old Grand daughter could not bust into.

That's pretty much what I do also. At least it has an alarm. It may not stop them but hopefully it will make enough noise for a fellow camper to take notice.

The way I look at is that many of us don't have insurance on our teardrops and tiny trailers; but most of do have insurance on our tow vehicles. Therefore, if someone breaks into our trailer, it's on our back; but, if someone breaks into our auto, hopefully, at least part of that is covered. Also, I think that people are more likely to question why someone is messing with the auto than the trailer. It's just more obvious. As far as the wallet goes, it stays in my pocket most the time, as does an auto key and trailer key. Also, I don't temp fate. I try to keep valuables out of sight.

Actually she is 12 and would use a "bobby pin" and do it in about 20 seconds....

Might have to pick one of these up. I was at a music festival last summer, where they let me park the teardrop with the tents, but I couldnt keep my car with the trailer. Positioned properly (in the floor under the mattress), nobody would know the safe is there. As someone else mentioned - locks are only for the honest anyway. Thanks for the link! *bookmarked*

The only advice I can give is go to a local locksmith, they sell all kinds of things that you can use. They have full size safes all the way down to hidden storage the size of a soda can or deck of cards. I'm sure if you go there and tell them what you're looking for, they'll have quite a few different ideas for you.

I've hidden valuables in large thermos containers, lighting (LED) fixtures, even beat up drink cups. Having things hidden doesn't really do much because they'll be eventually found, but if you have them hidden in plain sight it will be EASILY over looked.

How about a diversion safe? There are tons of kinds out there, and I'm sure a can of fruit cocktail wouldn't rouse anyone's suspicions.

A recent trip to wally world showed they had lots of lockbox options and some with keypads for entry and relatively small and cheap that could be mounted into a small camper and provide the security you are talking about and at a low price.

simulated security systems can do a lot to discourage theft, I have a blinking LED on my tool box at work that makes the new mechanics a little afraid to go near it until they find out it is just hooked to two AA batteries and came attached to the packaging of something I bought. they sell blinking LEDs that hook up to 12V systems for cars also. A thief won't know what kind of security system you have in a TD, unlike car systems that are made/installed by an manufacturer that turns out hundreds of thousands of the the same basic design, with the same weaknesses.
Put in an "extra" outlet box and a cover plate with the top screw in and the lower screw just glued in place, big enough for keys and some deep enough for a wallet.
