iPhone camping apps?

Postby SteveW » Fri Feb 17, 2012 3:47 pm

I was just browsing through the iTunes store and saw a few different tent and RV camping apps out there. Any that you guys use? Want to offer any feedback on them?

Tapatalk -- an app to view tnttt, and it's great!!

Google Earth -- sometimes you can see your campsite/campground before you go

Navigon -- a navigational app that has literally taken me all over our wonderful country. I still carry maps and an atlas, but Navigon suits me just fine.

Gas Buddy -- check local gas prices using your GPS location

The Weather Channel -- the free one is all I've used. GREAT!!! On one trip, I was coming up on a severe storm. We stopped for the evening because TWC showed we were going straight into the midst of the storm. A tornado did skip across the Interstate, doing damage on both sides of the road. Thank you, TWC!! Oh, and that storm was the reason I downloaded TWC.

Camping & Outdoor Recipes -- I'm not a crreative cook and this has given me ideas to cut the boredom of my cooking.

Have2P -- it wasn't working for a few months, but it is once again working.

AAA Discounts, AAA Trip Tik, AAA Roadside -- it's there if you need it.

AllStays Camp & RV -- Campgrounds and RV parks in your vicinity. It even shows the Walmart "Ask to Park" down the street.

Mobile KOA -- I stayed in KOA Kabins last spring when I found the weather was too cold for me to tent camp. It also shows the KOA Kampgrounds close to you, in a specific state, or in a specific province (Canada)

Leafsnap -- take a pic of a tree's leaf and you'll get an answer as to what kind of tree it is.

Flashlight -- comes in handy if you just can't find your flashlight.

YPmobile -- Yellow Pages mobile. Using your GPS location, it can give your nearby businesses, gas prices, deals, or any specific business you're looking for. It gives the distance to the business, and even has a mapping app to give you directions to get there.

Redbox -- gives the location of the Redboxes near you.

Craiglist -- bored? See what's for sale around your location :)

There are many apps for specific department stores (Walmart, Kohl's, etc.) that are free to download. Some even show the nearest one to you using your GPS. Stores such as Michael's have coupons on their iPhone app that can be scanned at the cash register.

There are many apps for specifc restaurants or pizza places. You can order food on-line, find their locations, etc.

I use some apps specific to my home location/state. IN Wineries -- locations of the wineries in Indiana--sounds like a good app so I can go wine tasting on my camping trips!!!

There's even an app "Indy DT" -- Indianapolis Downtown What to do? It shows all of the museums, eateries, shopping, parks, sports, worship, and arts/entertainment venues in the downtown area. Look for apps for the cities around your campground.

The Dutch oven app-it tells you how many briquettes needed for a particular temperature desired according to the size of your oven. Mine is actually a Droid app, but I imagine there is an iPhone one, too.

I have several on my iPhone & iPad, but the one I use most often is called "Camping List" by Engineered Stuff... http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/camping-list/id383720993?mt=8

They have items already in lists, that you can leave or remove. That was nice because they had many items that I forgot to add to my list. You can create categories and sub-categories, like "CLOTHES" and then "Hubby's Clothes" - "My Clothes"... and then "jeans, shorts, socks". I even put my grocery lists in there... one for "Perishables" and one for "Non Perishables". And of course, you can check-off each item as you pack it. For groceries, I check-off items as I buy them, then I un-check everything and check it again, when I pack it in the food locker/ice chest. I love that app!

I have a whole "camping page" on my iPhone/iPad... other apps on it are "Oh Ranger" (a pretty good app), "Coleman Lantern" , "Coleman Recipes", and then I have "bookmarked with an icon to the home screen" Recreation.gov and ReserveAmerica. I also have "Survival Guide" but have to admit, I haven't even looked at it.

On that page, I even have a couple of "White Noise" apps, because I am addicted to fan noise and can't sleep without it. Just in case the electricity ever goes out and I can't have a fan, I can listen to white noise on my iPhone/iPad.

I have Woodall's campground app for RVs, Coleman lantern (you can pick which lantern you want to use as your flashlight!!), tapatalk, The Weather Channel, Leafsnap, ebay to find Coleman stuff (ok, that doesn't really count!!)

I'll check into Gas Buddy. Google Earth is a really good idea for checking out the campsites.I 've looked at AAA but haven't added it yet..probably should because it is supposed to give you faster roadside service if you need it.

I'll look again at DO apps..didn't see any good ones when I looked before.

I like that camping list idea, too. Sounds like a really good idea!

There is another thread on this from a few months back...I asked the same question about apps! There was a starfinder one...can't remember the name, I'll have to go back and look. I want that one too. So I know what the heck I'm looking at when I look at the sky!

I believe that Star Walk is the one that most people like ... I also use StarmapPro and Distant Suns.

Not sure if it works up there but if you have an iPad that has an inbuilt GPS(we refer to them as 3G/wireless) I use Mupmap. You have to pay for it but the offroading capabilities of this app are unreal. They do maps for North America as well.
Cheers
