Thanks all who replied, and especially Jerome and Grant for local suppliers! I was planning to talk with Eureka Boiler on West End Road (where I bought my steel) but now I'll see what OEM has to say, too. And I have to pop over the mountain to Redding every now and then anyway, so that's a possibility too!

Yeah, but I'm sure it will stop a 5.56 or a 7.62.

Nope, not a chance. SS109 projectile in 5.56 will penetrate (just) and as for the 7.62 FMJ.... no contest

Yeah but I think the aluminum is just a skin over the ceramic armor-- I mean, that's how I'm building mine, I thought everyone did it that way.

I'm building my teardrop right now. There is a guy in Eugene - Oregon that builds and sells teardrops. He said to me that he'll side my teardrop in aluminium for $300-$400, is that e fair price? I don't want to do it by myself, I never worked with aluminium and I don't want to mess up.

Here is my build:

That doesn't seem like a bad price to me. I bought a 4' x 12' sheet of 5052 0.04" aluminum for about $250 delivered in Dayton Ohio a few months ago.

I'd make sure the quote specifies just what sort of aluminum sheet he'll use and how he'll do it.

doug hodder wrote:Semi trailer repair shops will have it on a coil. Usually in either white or in the mill finish, .040 I think. I got 103" wide and it was I'm thinking like 13$ a running foot, but that was several years ago. Check the local yellow pages for those types of shops. It's easy to cut...just lay down a sheet of styro with the aluminum on top with a blanket and a piece of ply so you don't dent or scuff it, and run a circular saw across it with a carbide blade. Just what I've done. Doug

I would love ONE continuous sheet top to bottom, front to back...

FYI if anyone is looking in the Dallas area:

DSC Truck Services 5115 S. Cockrell Hill Rd (214) 330-4661
Aluminum roofing (not the sidewall)
.050 thick
103” Wide
As long as you like!
$18.24 liner foot

Thank you 2bits. I have been looking around and was coming up with nothing that wide.

You're welcome! Doug turned us one to the semi trailer place, my problem was finding one! Too many ad's and mus-matched search results these days. The guy I talked to was very cool and spent alot of time on the phone working out options. I am going to use the black aluminum that I have leftover from the LT for the sides, but this will work great for one solid wrap from front to back for the top!

Are there places any of you would recommend for mail ordering roof skin, 5' wide and long enough to run the length for an 8' teardrop? If there's a place to pick up near Austin, even better.

Thanks.

I would skip the idea of mail order, there has got to be some tractor trailer supply places around Austin. I won't google for ya, just try tractor trailer repair austin, tx then get on the phone

... or just google or look up in the phone book under aluminum or metal dealers in your area. I found several places that either had some or would order it for me.

Yep, been there done that, bought the T-shirt. Probably made at least 50 calls this morning after extensive google search. Spoke to several in Dallas and Houston looking for leads but they all said the same thing. "We got it but there has to be somebody in Austin or San Antonio that carries the stuff". That's what one would think but if they do they sure don't want anyone to know it.

One thing for sure, if I do find a place you can bet I'll let everyone know about it. So far this has been the hardest part of the build. :?
