Glen speak for your self I'm turning 70 March 4th and I'm in my second and third childhood.

On a sad note 10 years ago I rescued a dog that was headed to the pound she was about 5 then and is about 15 now
her owner a friend who lives on a farm said "Bingo" isn't doing well the vet says she has heart failure and if she doesn't
improve she will have to be put down tomorrow.
The lady who took her in recurses horses 39, dogs 6, rabbits 4 with 2 more on the way, donkeys 3, cows 8, and too many cats to count.
if fact when she was in the vets today with Bingo she got another cat.
Bingo was a sweet never met a stranger type of dog I'll miss seeing her when I visit but she had a great life and a super place to live it.

Mel, just getting back to Low and Wide ... What do you like or not like about it ? The more I think on this subject , the more I think L & W is a distinct advantage in the long run ... Streamline , better fitting the aerodynamic profile of the TV, easy access to the roof for inspection/ cleaning , and for a layout you can place the bed sideways , which gives you Much more floor space... JMHO
My Big trailer is over 10’ high , difficult to access anything on the roof (which cannot be walked on ), tows like a parachute ..nowhere to store it unless I make a special building, or RENT storage space .... grrrrr!!!! :x

I originally went with the low and wide look because of the look. It just fits my "eye". But as I work on it and look at it behind the truck, I like the way it will fit in the aerodynamic envelope. I want to keep it out of the wind as much as possible both to avoid any aerodynamic drag and to avoid any structural issues that excess exposure to the wind would create. I'm real happy with the overall shape. I was constrained by the size of the garage opening and I originally had only planned on building in the garage and storing it elsewhere since I have no storage room at my house. But as it turns out, as long as the wife can park "her" car in the garage, she doesn't mind if I store the trailer in the garage and I certainly don't mind parking the truck in the driveway. Getting the trailer in and out of the garage door can only be accomplished by using a hand dolly since there are only inches to spare on each side but that's the advantage of foam. It's so light it's a one person job (even pushing it back up the slope of the driveway to put it away).

Funny thing about this trailer. My wife was originally kind of skeptical about this build, but is now enthusiastically asking when it will be ready for use. I told her that Memorial Day was my unofficial target for completion and she was disappointed. If I can't finish before then, we won't go out in the trailer till July since she is not allowed to be more than a few minutes away from work during the month of June (even days off) due to a new computer system and electronic medical records system being installed. We'll see how much progress I can make over the weekend and that will give me an idea of how realistic Memorial Day is.

I didn't get a chance to post after last weekend's work which went off pretty well despite my limitations. I just have to learn to ask for my son's help when he's around and try to plan around his comings and goings. The weekend was supposed to provide a measuring stick to see if I can get it done by May 1. Anyway, I got the front cabinet finished (except for face frame and doors which will go on during the interior work) and went to set it in place. I just happened to measure from the back bulkhead wall forward to the front cabinet and found out I made the cabinet too deep. I didn't have 80" for the bed length. :x :x :x :x I made the cabinet based on calculations not actual measurements and screwed up. I think I can salvage the whole thing by trimming the nose end of the cabinet and moving the whole cabinet forward by a few inches but it just irritates me when I do something like that!!!! So the wife imposed completion date took a hit, but it might still be doable...it's mighty ambitious but I just gotta try. I've got two months, less a couple of weekends that are committed to other things but also a week of vacation that will be a working on the trailer vacation.

Re: Road Foamie - 3/11 platform supports and front cabinets

Postby atahoekid » Sun Mar 11, 2012 9:38 pm

After a pretty good weekend of work, I've gotten the front cabinets completed and set in place. I also got the supports for the sleep platform (floor) in place. Things are progressing in a slow manner but I'm glad to be moving ahead Here are some pics:

In the top photo, the platform deck will slide into the front cabinet and be supported by the 2 x 2's you see there about a foot above the trailer floor. Unfortunately that area below will become dead space unless I get motivated enough to try a build front access hatch that will hinge open. Maybe out of diamond plate since I plan on doing that in that location anyway... I will have plenty of space so I doubt that I will go to the trouble of trying it.

The second photo shows the platform supports epoxied in place. Just in front of the rear bulkhead the two plastic tanks will be for fresh water and grey water. Just gotta hook those up and figure out where the fresh water intake port and the grey water dump valve will be located.

Next step is to lay the floor and create an access hatch in it so I can get to the tanks if I ever need to service them.

All in all a good (though short) few weekends of work.
