Older guy from Northern California

Postby USMC2533 » Tue Feb 28, 2012 2:11 pm

Hi Folks,

My name is Pete, and my wife Penny, live in Oakdale Ca. We are 90 miles east of San Francisco, 90 miles south of Sacramento, and 90 miles west of Yosemite.

I have been lurking on this wonderful web site for almost a year. I am definately addicted! Penny and I started, as many of you, with tent camping, then moved up to a 20' Terry trailer, then on to a cab over camper. We have missed camping for many years and it is time to start again.

My plans are to start with a cargo trailer conversion and move on to a small standy. I enjoy woodworking and welding, and with all your help, should beable to make something we will enjoy!

Looking forward to meeting many you, down the road!

Welcome to the madness. We will be headed out to California in June and 90 miles west of you and 90 miles east of you camping and visiting relatives.

I appreciate your service to our country. I'm partial to the USMC since my Great Grandfather and my Brother are Marines.

Real Marines are 03s! Three generations here. 0302. 0302, and 0311. In the fall the 0311 will be moving to Colorado, join a unit there, and proceed to "Swing with the Wing" as he attends "Mines" and gets his engineering degree using the GI Bill.

I have an Extra class license. Even some 03s can be taught to do something other than "grunt".

Welcome aboard.

Cheers,

Gus

Gus....I knew the the morse code in boot camp from boy scouts, and guess what MOS school I went to.............

I joined up 56 years ago, when Sgt's were E4's and there were no L/Cpl's.

Remember all Marines are 03's.

My last unit was 1st. Anglico, Camp Smith, Oahu........good duty!

Thanks for the Welcome,

Dad was a Raider with the 2nd Raider Bttn. James Roosevelt, the presiden't son was the XO and is mentioned in some of Dad's letter's home. Dad, then Major Earl R. Marquardt, became the the XO of the First Amphib Recon Bttn under James Jones, Sr. father of James Jones, Jr. future CMC! I once asked Dad what he did during the war. He said they went ashore on Jap held islands in their rubber boats, took prisoners, questioned the prisoners, and left in their rubber boats. I asked him what they did with the prisoners. He said the Sergeants took care of them. I never asked "exactly" what that meant.

My tour was unremarkable.

#2 son joined the reserves, completed boot camp and I later drove him to CP for the School of Infantry. I got him an eyeball to eyeball with a Major General (mate from TBS) before he reported to SOI. He was a bit embarrassed at the time but now thinks that it was pretty cool. The whole time I was on active duty I never even saw a General Grade Officer, ha. He finished SOI and within a week his reserve unit was activated and he got an all expense paid (at considerable government expense) trip to Iraq. He then came home and went to Bridgeport and was an aggressor for a few months for the units training there. He's still in the active reserves and just got meritoriously promoted to Corporal. He's finishing up at a CC in San Luis Obispo and has been accepted to the Colorado School of Mines where he plans on majoring in Petroleum Engineering. There may be hope for that child. The USMC(R), the miracle cure for wayward children.

Semper Fi,

Cheers,

Gus

Thanks Dano,

Used to live in San Jose, we bought a new car in Morgan Hill, a 67 Malibu.
Can't remember the park east of you in the foothills, we used have Ham Radio Field Day in that park.
